Mixin bidness with pleasure started back in April. The company I work for had asked me more than a year ago if I was interested in moving to New Mexico. I told them no, I’m not. I’ve only been home one year after spending three years in Southern California, so the answer is no. I’m not moving again….right now.
Along comes March 2005 and the company wants to know if I can participate in a two week rotation with two other coworkers, to New Mexico, until they can find and hire a replacement for one of the NM team guys. Sure, says I, certainly, no problem. It’s not wise to tell the boss man NO too many times in a row, don’t ya know.
Paperwork and visit requests get taken care of, reservations are made, and I’m telling my husband that I’ve heard great things about the Cloudcroft area and we’ll be staying there on our first trip out. We’re staying in a fancy old Lodge, built a long time ago, and in the past, frequented by Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable and Judy Garland. Let’s take the KLRs and we can have a grand time!
April makes it’s debut and we head across NE Texas, New Mexico bound. The KLRs are tied down in the bed of our Chevy, the rear seat of the crew cab is folded down and loaded with luggage, work laptop, work files, cameras, riding gear, some snacks and of course, Dr. Pepper. We arrive in Cloudcroft after dark, have a little trouble finding The Lodge, but finally get checked in.

I work all week, while my husband huddles in the ancient, tiny, pine paneled room we ended up in. The TV was so old, we were surprised it had a wireless remote. But it was quaint. My first day off rolls around…..

We were relegated to the folks with kids/dogs or smokers building, half a block from the main building.

We rode in spite of the cold and snow, in spite of the ice, and we had fun, in spite of our freezing fingers and toes.

Over the next few months, we got to come back again and again. In short, we’ve had a two week trip once a month since April. I fear that it’s over now though, the guy that left the team is coming back. It seems to please the company since they were having difficulty finding an engineer with the experience level they were looking for. I’m a little tired of the trips, just because it wears you out, being away from home, riding all you can, then being home and trying to catch up on home duties, then doing it all again. The following photos are some of my favorites from our trips in April, May, June and July. I might get one last trip in September, maybe not.

We decided to park our bikes on this ride and climb up to investigate a cave. Yeehaw!

Not much for living space….
But it’s got a great view!

My husband found a big ole turkey feather and decorated my hair with it.

One of my coworkers came out and rode with us on one of our last rides.

We’ve had a blast each time that we’ve been out there. It’s a great place to ride. It was just a little sweeter (when we took time to think about it) that we weren’t paying for the trip…ah mixin bidness with pleasure. More pleasure please!
