You can borrow mine when I get back from my trip. Leaving in the morning. It's a good one, from www.helmetcamera.com. The mount is indestructible and you can mount it almost anywhere, not just on a helmet, using super velcro. Of course if you need one before then, I'm no help.

I want it for Vegas Next month. What determines the resolution? Is it the camera or the recording device? When I buy I want a full screen resolution picture?

Juice, this isn't a proper helmet cam, and I'm not sure how you plan on using one, but check out this one I saw on the SMJ sit. CLICK HERE! (http://www.supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?t=18230&highlight=helmet+cam)

This guy bought his at Circuit City, and I saw some things every similar at Best Buy. The one I saw at Best Buy would capture from a VCR, DVD, TV, etc.etc.

I thought about buying one for myself, just for the main purpose of recording. That way, in case of a get off, I wouldn't be out as much money if it got damaged vs. my good camcorder. Just an idea.

The camera. Mine has 480 lines of resolution. The best they had at the time. Now they have one a little higher I think. Check out their site. With mine you still need a camcorder that has A/V inputs. You're welcome to borrow the camera, but you'll need your own camcorder. I also bought a fannypack from them for carrying the camcorder. The remote camera needs to be connected to 12v DC, or you can use a batterpack and about 6 AA's. I connect to the bike's battery with a cig lighter type plug.

Are you looking for the kind that connects to a camcorder? There are a couple of companies now putting out a remote camera that connects to a mini-harddrive and captures digital video to that. More compact, but the format it captures in, mpeg4, is harder to edit. With the remote camera/camcorder combination you can capture the video to your computer as .avi, which is much easier to edit in almost any editing program.

Check out helmetcamera.com's site. They, and jonescam.tv are usually the most recommended, but helmetcamera has the better mount. They both sell the Sony bulletcam.

Yes, it is a nice sturdy little setup. How ever I'm having trouble locating a Mini Cam that has both a input and a output. I might have to go with a DVR recorder instead of a camera. Something Like this little unit

Also........What format does it record in? How in the hell do you covert the tape to an AVI or Mpeg?

Fitty
08-27-2006, 08:57 PM
Yep, I'm back. You only need analog inputs. You use the firewire output to export the video to your computer. During the export process the video is captured in avi format. MiniDV is captured in avi format. If you use Windows Moviemaker I think you can also capture in wmv format. That Mustek PVR stores video in mpeg4 format probably. That's sometimes called a type of avi, but it's different, and not the type of avi you get when you capture from a MiniDV camcorder. We can talk about it Thursday.

Brian,
I bought a Samsung SCD365 that will record of off VCRs DVDs (AV in)
for 300.00 @ Bestbuy

The box doesn't say AV in because it has some type of little USB looking plug in that has an AV input at the end of the pig tail
but any camera that allows you to record off of TV or a VCR
will allow you to hook up a remote lense

thats the exact same camera that I have :)

I bought mine about 3 weeks ago for $200 cause it was the last one they had and the floor unit.

Juice, one more thing,,,,,DO NOT get a camcorder that records to DVDs. The bumping and jarring while riding will make it record horribly. Well, that's what I've been told and read on forums.

Now if you are buying this for some bedroom use,,,,well the bumping and jarring might effect it there also! Never mind.:)

Well, after spending a bunch of money and about two weeks of my precious time. I think that it is safe to say that my Helmet cam experience is a failure. I have been to every camera, pawn shop and retail store in the area with very little luck. I did manage to locate one camera that was on Franks list and it had a av in plug, but we could not get it to work either. Is there anything that you have to do before the external cam will work? Maybe change the input or something on the camcorder? Or when I plug in the av plug should the camcorder automatically pick it up?

JayD
09-07-2006, 04:38 PM
Juice,
on mine you have to go to a certain menu and turn something on to get the external lense to turn on

I have to get the owners menu out as I can't remember which of the 20 menu screens it's in

As Fitty would say "It's hell gettin old" :D

Juice, I use the Sony DCR-HC32 for use with the helmet cam.

I have to put mine in the PLAY/EDIT mode, then hit P-MENU. Then from there, I hit the REC/CTRL feature. It puts up a STOP, REC PAUSE, and REC START. When the helmet cam is hooked up, it views what the helmet cam is showing. If you were trying with a Sony Camcorder, this might help some.

man, I wouldn't expect too much quality out of that. Just about all web cams will do better video that this thing. 15 fps at 640 X 480 isn't very pretty on a TV set. It would be alright for a web video.

Price considered you get what you pay for...

I wouldn't mind one to play with and do some test filming. Huummmmmmm, where can I stick it?

Ritten
10-17-2006, 05:08 PM
For webvideo it should be plenty. The video that I took with my camera in Arizona and Nevada was 640 at 15fps. I agree with Kenny though, for TV quality video you'll want something with more resolution.

The owner reviews at amazon.com were mixed with some complaints about image quality, and it's not compatible with Mac. I'm looking for something like that camera but still looking for good reviews.

I saw a really nice set-up last weekend. They told me that the MiniDV camcorder also records to a flash card but the picture quality is poor. Picture quality of the MiniDV tape is excellent and easier to edit. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for, especially with electronics. The remote helmet camera is a Sony from helmetcamera.com that has 480 resolution. The kit is $300 and has everything you need except for the camcorder. The mount is almost indestructible. I just ordered mine last night.

The camcorders must have AV in/out. A remote control is preferable. Judging by the responses on another forum (KTMTalk.com), some popular models are the Sony DCR HC series and the Canon ZR series. Even though these camcorders are obsolete, there are decent deals to be had on ebay for $300 - $350.

I should have my set-up by next weekend.

Fitty

That's the exact setup I have. I got it last year and the Canon ZRs still had the auxillary inputs. This year's models don't, as Juice found out, the last years are still available on Ebay as you said. I think I paid $200 for mine last year new. Got the helmet camera and mount from helmetcamera.com. Also got different lenses. It comes with an fairly wide angle. I also got two more less wide angle lenses. One may be normal or slight telephoto, not sure. All I've used is the one that came on it though.

The new wireless Samsung is out now. They had a review on one of the geeks sites and they said it's only down fall was that it didn't have night vision.

They said the video quality was good for those types of cameras. The still pictures sucked and were not as good as Samsung's cell phones.

I think if you want a pro-quality video, you have to use what the pros use. If you watch Real World/Road Rules on MTV or Fear Factor, you will see that they use VioSport.

If you are looking for decent quality video, then there are many new options available. It seems that sports cams are becoming very popular, which will increase competition and ultimately reduce the prices. I noticed that VioSport has reduced the price of the Adventure Cam III.

I wish I new what they use to broadcast the AMA Supercross on-bike camera. It does drop out on the rough stuff, but the entire unit is contained on the helmet and it provides (roughly) broadcast quality video.

I'm not 100% sure, but I was under the impression that they used a transmitter and a receivering unit. I thought about playing around with one to see how they are. You can get them dirt cheap on ebay.

Have you seen any of the ArenaCross races this year? The announcer Gauld takes one of the racers bikes out for a quick lap of the track and the camera system he uses gives a perfect picture even when he doubles and goes over the whoops, maybe he's not riding as hard as the SuperCross guys but man it looks soooo good.
