Ripped from another site

On Sat, after arriving at the Spillway and getting all ready to ride, an employee with the Army Corp on the side of his truck stopped us and proceeded to tell us that the 90 db sound limit was now being enforced, because the neighbors were complaining! He was sound testing bikes that 'seemed loud'. We talked with him a little bit, and discussed the fact that nearly ALL stock bikes are louder than 90 dbs... as are most lawn mowers and some weed wackers... and even rule-stringent California lets them run at 96!!

He also had a sound reader, but nothing to measure RPMS... not very precise!

Anyway, he explained that for now, the corp is targeting the gross offenders at the Spillway, as an alternative to shutting it down completely... so if you've got an MX bike with an aftermarket pipe, or have removed the baffles from the stock pipe, expect to get kicked out of the Spillway!

Don't shoot the messenger, guys!

Well people, tell me this doesn't really surprise anyone? All I can say is keep them quite. It sucks, however this is simalar to having to run a US forestry approved spark arrestor. Maybe alittle different, but along the same lines.

Nobody should even live close enough to where everybody rides to even hear it that much.

WTF!?

Same thing happened at Brainerd in Minnesota .. same thing happens anywhere people go riding.

People buy land and houses cheap cause it's next to a racetrack or riding area. Then a few years down the road they start complaining about all the noise and people.

It's just the natural cycle of things ....

Yeah, I know. Actually it's even worse w/ the people against the refineries right there. Like you said, they moved in knowing that stuff was there, and then decide it's a problem.

But, just checked on my way back from BR, and the riding area is at least a 1/2 mile away and on the other side of a levee from any houses. Some people just need to bitch about stuff, I guess.

Noise is the single biggest enemy we face. Up here in ONtario we are faced with several fights each year of riding areas that are being closed. The same old complaint of noise. But with more riders riding in less places it isn't one or two noisy bikes a day, it is twenty or thirty and this is where the problem arises from.

That said I run my DRZ 400 s with a yosh pipe on it and when in town I run it with the stock tip and around 100 or so decibles. I also run it this way when up north where no one is around but he stupid deer. ( they seem to like playing chicken with me. ) In these two spots the noise I create keeps me alive by being noticed. But when riding in noise sensetive areas I put in the smallest teck tip and the bike now runs around 92 db. Quieter than stock, more power than stock and lighter than stock.

Sound enforcement is a good thing, it will keep the yahoo's out and keep our riding areas open for the rest of us.

I like the one where the govt. paid everyone by the BR metro airport to "soundproof" their houses do to noise because the airport had grown since they moved in years ago---well to me you move next to an airport you better think about population growth before you buy--

I just spoke to someone with the park service, and he told me they ARE doing noise readings, however, (for now) it is just on bikes that are obvioulsy over the limit or you are acting an ass.

Also, the trail area should be open in the first week of March if all goes well.
