Has anyone done this and if so what was your opinion of the ride?
I am looking at riding to Boute,la and head west on hwy 90 to New Iberia, and turn west onto Hwy 14, through Abbeville. Then hwy 82 to Pecan Island on west to Cameron then north to Sulpher La and stay in Lake Charles.

I've been from Lafayette to New Orleans on HWY90 a few times. It isn't the smoothest of roads. Although, from Boutte to New Iberia, your choices are REALLY limited. I find that stretch rather boring and cruise at 80+ when I can. Just be very careful of speed in Morgan City. The cop (there's only one, but he checks HWY90 EVERY second he is on duty) is a bit of an ass.
HWY14 is a 4 lane with speed limits of 45 and 55. You pass through a few small towns. Much smoother/nicer than HWY90.
HWY82 is a smaller 2 lane. Very little traffic. It's quite a relaxing ride. I've followed that down to Holly Beach a few times. Haven't been since the hurricane, so I'm not sure how well that road is holding up once you get close to the Gulf. As far as I know, the road didn't take heavy damage so it should still be a nice ride.

I've done the ride on 90 from Boute to New Iberia a million times (almost literally) and unless you're looking to start your ride in New Iberia, you're better off turning on 3198 in Houma and taking that all the way into downtown where you pick up Barrow St. and then Bayou Black Dr. which is the old Hwy 90. Old 90 runs along side the new one all the way to Morgan City for a nice cruise along the bayous. Once in Morgan City you can pick up the new superslab, cross the bridge and turn off again onto 182. That will take you through all the back towns and communities along the way on into New Iberia.
Superslab from one point to the other is just over an hour. Going this way, plan on it taking three.

What our smilie friend is refering to is "love bugs". Nasty suckers that are slow moving and filled with lots of bug juice that swarm around here during this time of year. Taking the back roads at the slower cruising speeds and it won't be that bad, but be prepared to stop and clean your face shield every 30 minutes if you're on the four lane doing 75+. The first cool snap and they're gone.

if you do as ted suggested and take 182 after morgan city, it is a pleasent ride and nice scenery. beware that the casino in balwin does not draw you to it, lol. take 182 all the way into new iberia. hwy 14 (center street) starts on main street across fron the shadows on the teche, it is an old plantation home. turn left off of main and away you go.

I skidded off a road in my camaro a few years back down there and the lafourche cops were really cool and wernt going to do shyt.. but then the state trooper saw the flashing lights and showed up and insisted on writing me a ticket...
