Ok I've seen a couple different "styles" of tires on these DS's... so what gives?

Is type 1 like a 75% on-road 25% offroad variety compared to 50/50 on type 2 or is type 1 just a pure street tire (motard or whatever its called)?

Type1 is a supermoto tire. It's sticky on the street and can do light duty in the dirt. It's not really a good dualsport tire. It's a single purpose tire with a specific audience.
Type2 is an extreme dualsport tire that is 95% dirt oriented. It's a freakin' knobby. If you use a tire like that on the street, you'd have to be a good rider to keep the bike out of the ditches.........

I had you covered with, "you'd have to be a good rider"....medical records to the contrary notwithstanding. :)
