Having had my fill of speed in the Ozarks, I got home on the weekend with time for a slower ride on my DR through Kisatchie Natl. Forest near Camp Claiborne and Kincaid Lake. The leaves are mostly gone in AR but the fall colors are just now at their peak in some areas of LA.

The trails I took you and Kevin on at Claiborne are getting beat up even more, and unfortunately the FS doesn't do much trail rehab. There are a lot of old logging roads in the area that are in better shape and legal to ride on with a plated bike. Most of them are between 1 and 3 miles longs, and some conect at the the marked trails. I've been riding there for years, and I'm still finding new trails.
This is one 3 mile loop on the north end Claiborne:

Don't you have a Wee-strom?

Don't you have a Wee-strom?
A V-strom with the right tires could easily handle these trails. The only thing you have to look out for are "rollers" - those broken tree limbs (especially the ones at an angle) that roll with your tire if you hit them going too slow. Maintain a safe pace and they're not a problem.

Yeah the sand and the roots are tough on any bike, especially a 300+ lb. dual sport. That's why I stay off the marked OHV trails mostly. Where I ride at Claiborne there are almost no roots or sand. That's what's nice about a dual sport bike - all the old logging roads are legal (unless marked closed).
The final map of designated roads has not been finalized yet by the Forest Service. So it appears that 90% of the roads will remain "fair game" for most of next year. I'm hearing that by Sept. of 2007, the official map will be released, which will kill some routes and totally eliminate "cross country travel" in all districts.
