I heard the other day that not many USA citizens have a passports. The gov. is working on changing that:

Short story is you will (in the future) need a passport to come from Canada, Mexico, and those islands to the south. Places that you didn't need one before.

Before long, you'll need one to come offshore when the rig's not latched up. I'll be going through customs this morning to get back on dry land.
Glad I got mine last year.

Today is the point where you need a passport to FLY into the US...
June 2008 is the cutoff for travelling by car....

Yeah it's silly. I'm going to need a passport to go fishing off shore since we go out 100 miles sometimes.

I've had my own passport since I was 13. I cannot imagine why you would NOT want one. It makes border crossing easier (one document to carry) and it is not hard to get one.

Most of the "kids" that I meet working at LSU have only been out of the STATE for Senior Trip and that was to Florida. We work with a guy from Madagascar and he has been to over 50 countries and for every vacation he goes somewhere out of this country...
As a boy from Pierre Part once told me, "Louisiana is the greatest place on Earth, why would I want to go anywhere else, dude?"
Americans are raised to be scared of traveling, because something unknown might happen. Foreigners do it hoping for the unknown to happen.
It's reminds me of the bumper sticker: ALL YOUR FEARS ARE LIES.
....anyway even though it's a government racket pass the word, because you never know when a weekend ride to Texas might end up in Matamoros.

My dad was in the military (Army) so we traveled on two different occasions to live in Germany. And plus you move around alot state side, so traveling for me no problem. Like stated above, you tend to see that not many people in the states do not have a passport. Currently I'm working overseas (offshore industy) and when you talk to people from the UK, it's like everyone has a passport and travel alot out of the country.

Yeah, and this is going to be bad for some that work offshore because they won't be able to get one. The first time my old rig towed overseas, and everyone going had to apply for passports (I already had one.). I was really suprised at how many people were not able to get one. If they owe taxes to the state or Fed. government, if they owe back child support, or have a felony on record, take them out of the picture. They were able to get one.

Every single one of these are good reasons to keep someone from leaving the country IMHO.
I don't care if they need it for their job. Do the crime(yes, not supporting your kid or paying your taxes is a crime), do the time.

It may be even better because you don't have to have a passport to leave the country. The passport is for getting back in.
