Can you believe...

I called every place in Lafayette. It appears that the cheapest place won't mount/balance a tire for any less than $30 EACH!!!

Hell... my tire only cost $50!!!

I'm not even bringing the bike in... I just want to hand them the rims and a set of tires... $30 EACH!

To to pour salt on the wound, they say there's a waiting period of up to a week!

Any of y'all have the same problem???

I'll mount my own damn tires for that price.

It's not just Laffy its everywhere. There are a few guys here on the board that has tire changers. Maybe one of them will read this and help you out.

Cycle World in Houma used to only charge 15 a tire if you brough in the wheels, but I'm not sure if they do that anymore. I bought my own tire changing set up anyway and have changed a few tires for the guys here on the board. I'm offshore right now, but if you can wait a couple of weeks, there's a few others who have tires to change and if you're heading down this way I can hook you up.

I was hoping to get em changed for this weekend. I'll give it a shot in the back yard tonight or tomorrow. I'm sure it's gonna take me a while since I haven't changed a tire since my high school days.

Ritten, Thanks for the offer. If the tire proves to stiff for me, I'll give you call.

Time to go file down the sharp edges on a couple of large screw drivers... :)

Use dishwashing soap!!! It works wonders. I hear through the grape vine that Chappy uses silicone spray which sounds like a damn good idea. When we changed out JayD's rear Tourance, we didn't even need irons. With the soap it just popped right onto the rim! That was also with three guys pulling and pushing though.

I just got one of these:

http://www.nomartirechanger.com/ShoppingCartImages/JrProUltimate.jpg

I bought a Harbor Freight changer last year, but I did not like it. It is kind of cheap and scratches the wheels. The No-Mar changers are all rubber coated.

The last time I tried to get the Gold Wing tires changed I could only find one place that actually had the tires I wanted then I had to pay too much for the tires and way too much to get them changed. I needed them for a trip to the east coast so I was pretty much forced to pay whatever they wanted. Now I will change my own motorcycle and car tires.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you out because I am in central Mississippi. But if you ride a lot, it is cheaper to go in with some of your buddies and buy a changer. The prices on changing tires seems to be going up everywhere.

You changing tubeless or tube type? With tubeless you'll need something to break the bead, but with tubes you might be able to break it by hand. Once the bead is broken all you need is tire irons and some sort of lubricant like they said.

Here's a link to the cheapest way to break a bead using 2 X 4's.

Fitty: It's a KLR 650 I was changing out. Tube tires.

Well... I got the tires changed last night with a couple of screw drivers and lots of disk soap. Took about 1 1/2 hours working by myself. I put air in them a few minutes ago at my work office. They have an air compressor in the shop.

I'm just hoping it holds air since I used screw drivers. I hope I didn't pinch the tube in the process. I'm gonna order a set of tire spoons for next time to help keep the tube safe.

Fingers crossed... :)

Thats a neat trick... Cool12

I'll keep that in mind next time around... especially for tubeless tires. :D

That's always a risk. One way to minimize that risk is to put a few pounds of air in the tubes first and put some talcum powder on them before levering on the last bead of the tire.

D'oh!!!!!! I'm leaking air!!! Bable12

Oh well... I knew I should have waited till I had sun light to work in... I must have pinched the tube getting the tire back on in the dark.

I'll break it back down tomorrow, patch the tube, and give it a second go.

Practice makes perfect, right????

Not with screwdrivers as tire levers it doesn't.

Cycle World here in Houma stocks Motion Pro levers. Ride down here and get some before you destroy your tire.

I picked up some tire spoons in town Saturday. Unfortunately, the parents were in town this weekend, so I didn't get to work on it any. I'll give it another shot as soon as I get a chance.

On the up side, I aired it up and took a quick 5 minute test spin... The D606 tires are WAY better!! Me likes!!

I think the reason all the dealers charge so much is because they just don't want to mess with it. They have to pay disposal fees on tires, and if you don't buy the tires from them for that premium price, they don't make their money. What ever happened to service?

Yes... You're right... Bow12

I got it fixed up this past weekend. Cool12

Thanks for the advice of putting a touch of air in before spooning the tire on. (Spooning a tire... kinda sounds gay)

The new tires ROCK!!! The KLR is covered in mud now. :D

Oh, I did it myself because I wanted to learn how,
but I wonder if the sore hands and my kids laughing at me were worth it. uhh.: ROFL

But it was nice to know that I had a local shop willing to do it.
After seeing the posts in this thread, I realize how many places are willing to sell you a bike, but not willing or equipped to do something as basic as changing a tire for a reasonable price.

It's quite sad... they won't help you out unless they can make a buck.

For something that would take them 10 minutes start to finish... they're going to turn away customers.

Well... I know now who NOT to give my business to.
