View Full Version : Aux Fuel Cells

This guy has made a timber "platform" the width of his panniers to mount a fuel cell and other "goodies", the connection is for the cell to work in tandem with his tank!
a/ if he drops the bike and the rubber hose breaks/comes off there'll be fuel everywhere, don't worry about it being a fuel cell, may as well just put a wick on it!
b/ he's only got one, 10kg hanging off one side of the bike that can get lighter, how do you counter balance that?
c/ seems to have forgotten the gun rack!
The scary thing is that all the other posters seem to consider this normal?

haha, that's Mike, "evel Elvis" as Craig calls him, we rode in Ark with him....kewl dude! He did that when he rode an Iron but or double Iron to the 4 corner area this year

I've never been to 4-corners. They don't have gas stations in those states ????
Nope, not a one ;)
Being that they have so many transplanted Califorina people there, everything has been converted to run on carrot juice :D

It needs a waste water system too. If you are going elimate the need to stop might as well go all the way.
I have though about doing something like this, but the fear of being the human fireball always turns me off.
Needs a bumper sticker:
RUN ME OVER AND I'LL BLOW YOU UP.

Evil sent me this message ...
Post the link to the whole story and tell them that the fuel load was offset by gear on the other side.
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93192&highlight=project+Quota
Also tell them that the Summit Racing fuel cell has foam inside it to prevent fuel atomization in the event of an accident.
And don't forget that they are straddling 5-gallons of gas on any motorcycle they ride, and that gas is right on top of a HOT motor! If a crash is bad enough to blow up my Summit Fuel Cell, the bike's main gas tank will have already split and drenched me with fuel.
My fuel cell has two valves. There is no fuel flowing through the lines normally. When the main tank is dry, I open the valves and transfer the AUX fuel load to the main tank.
BTW, I was certified a couple weeks ago on my Iron Butt Ride!
(Small world, isn't it ?)

Fully loaded in "pack mule" mode, the Quota gets 35mpg. It has 5.2 gallons of fuel. The AUX fuel cell holds 2.5 gallons extra. That increases my safe fuel range from about 190 miles to about 270 miles.
Out West it can be 150-200 miles in between gas stations. Occasionally, you can come to a fuel stop that is closed. That has happened to me at night in New Mexico before and on Sundays here in the hills.

Man, this is some wierd shit. Australians? Christians? Evil Rockers? MAn the plot thickens!
Welcome Mike!
AKA "Evil Elvis"??? Aaaa, Never mind...
Congrats on the Iron Butt certification!
My original question was “Why?” I mean, a 200+ mile gap between gas stations or them being closed is a valid concern, but why not just strap down an extra fuel cell? I mean you would have to stop and pour it in the actual gas tank. Why would it have to be connected and isolated with valves and such? Are there restrictions on how many stops one can make? Is this a race against the Clock? (or maybe I should say the Calendar ;) )
Anyway, I’m gonna go read the whole thread now. Maybe even look up some “Iron Butt” rules.

Thats a fair question. The answers are "time" and "distance".
Travelling, I can run through a tank of gas in 2.5 hours. I can sit comfortably on the motorcycle for much longer than that. I get tired of stopping for fuel every 175-200 miles when on long trips.
Carrying fuel on-board, but not plumbed, will still cost you time when it comes time to top off the main tank.
Every gas stop costs you a minimum of 30-minutes. It usually ends up being longer than that. Every fuel stop you can cut out on a long trip will shorten your travel time dramatically.
I don't run the fuel cell all the time. I only use it on long trips. It was nice to have the extra fuel at 1am in Clines Corners, New Mexico back in September !!! I pulled into the gas station and it was closed !
FWIW, Iron Butt Assn requires a fuel stop at least every 350-miles. They also limit fuel capacity to something like 11-gallons.
Like I said, my Q only gets about 35-38mpg. It only has a 5.2 gallon main tank. Range is 180-200 miles. If you're trying to knock out a thousand miles in a day, 5 or 6 intermediate stops is a pain.
My next project is to use a 5-gallon fuel cell in place of the topcase. That should put my range into the 350 - 380 miles range.
You don't need a fuel cell for a 200 mile Sunday ride. It is nice, though, when you're doing a 1,500 mile weekend (its 600-miles from here to Baton Rouge) or a 3,000 mile week. :)
I'm no Iron Butt veteran. In fact, I'll probably never ride in the big-daddy Iron Butt ride they have every other year. I'm just beginning to add Long Distance to the other types of riding I do. Its just another facet in the world of motorcycling!
Check out the Iron Butt website. Its pretty interesting!

There is much mojo down here on the bayou Craig. We just have to get off work to find it!

That is a cool site; and another facet I had never really given much thought to.
My bike has a 5 gal tank and gets about 45mpg, but I had never really given any thought on how to plan the logistics of me actually attempting to sucessfully cover 1500 miles in 24 hours
Kinda like a co-worker who was into Street-rods and said "I'd like to build my own Hot-rod". Sounds cool enough. But when he described the plywood jig that he made to hold the aluminum square tubing in place so he could Tig weld his own frame... Now that's another facet to "building" a street-rod.
More power to the "Iron Butt" warriors!:)

Dig the Guzzi! With the fuelie mod, it looks like a friggin B-29!
Thought seriously about a black Quota I ran into at the BMW shop in PlanoTX a few months back. Very clean. I ended up going a different direction for now, but will have a guzzi one day.
Kudos on the enginuity for the purpose. More kudos for applying parts from a speed shop to a bike!!

My buddy Brian (Young Skywalker at ADVrider) bought that black Quota back in December. Its now living here in Fayetteville. They Ebay'd it. Its a helluva lot of bike for only $4k !!!
Thanks for the compliments on the fuel cell. I used the Summit Racing stuff because I knew it was safety-approved by several racing organizations.
The extra range is really nice when riding out West...

Agreed. These fuel cells are used in race cars and are safer than the tanks on our bikes.
I have done an iron butt ride on a VTX1800C which only got 100 miles on a tank of gas and I've done them on an ST1100 which could go 300 miles on a tank. Even though it takes time to fill the bigger tank, having a longer range saves a huge amount of time. You spend time taking gear off, getting the card out, just the slowing down and pulling into the gas station costs you time. Not to mention the pain in the A** when the pump gives you a receipt with the wrong date or time on it Head Bang.
I have done several iron butt rides, and with a 300 mile range, it is not even a challenge. The last one I rode I took a 2-hour lunch break, casually rode along the east coast for a while and still finished with 5 hours to spare. I couldn't have done that on the VTX.

Nice set up. I have been working on plans for my DR650 for trips to Mexico and the Continental Divide. I am going to build panneir racks that will hold Kolpin Jr gas cans. These are made for ATV's and are very thin with a capacity of 1 1/2 gals. The racks will hold one can on each side and support my softbags. This way I can carry gas anytime I want or need to, but can leave them off also. It will double my range on the DR to 300 miles or more.
A friend of mine in Colorado has a Quota, don't see many around, but they are nice bikes.
