Well, I just ordered the Doohickey kit for the KLR. I finally got fed up with the weird noises and vibes and decided to be on the safe side and assume it isn't just big thumper vibrations. I'll post the job with pics if anyone want a guide.

Superfast delivery from Happy Trail. The "doo" is in the mail and on its way should be arriving this Monday.
Any way, the one thing I was wondering before I ordered the Doo was what WTF are the symtoms of a bad doo or spring? I gather noise and vibration are the two main characteristics but so many people claim to have had no idea untill they opened it up. I happen to pay pretty close attention to my thumper and the problems I'm trying to rectify are noise and vibration but at the same time I wonder if they are normal. There is one noise in particular which is a high pitched vibe I can here over the motor and road noise at all speeds and rpm's. But if I simply squeeze the windshield between my two fingers it goes away. But there seems to be another underlying noise I can't identify or locate. And the only time I adjusted the balancer it seemed to help a lot with both problems but they seem to have come back not as strong but still present. I suppose it'll come down to opening it up and checking, secretly I hope the damn part is in 2 pieces along with spring. At least my efforts will validated and the noise might go away.
Anyone else have have identifiable symptoms on their KLR?

I changed my doohickey at just over 8k. The spring was broke & just hanging. Good thing I never tried to adjust the tension! I'd recommend to anybody with a KiLleR to change it ASAP.

Any failures with your factory "DOO"?

Mine was a 06 with about 1800 miles when I changed it, and there wasn't any damage. But my old one was at the Meet where we changed them and his had a broken spring. Had a couple that where in bad shape. I would say do it, peace of mind is a good thing. Bike is damn near bullet proof once that is done.

Oh I'm definitely doing it, I tend to beat subjects to death in the wrangling of information. Really I'm just curious how many other people have issues, how many have fixed them, and what the syptoms were if any, and what noticable difference was made if any. So down the line I can give an informed opinion based on fact not suppositions.

Kenny's doo was broken on his 06 and mine was fine on my 2000. Just luck of the draw on those things. It's a replacement worth doing and not too terribly time consuming.

Now I get why this thing would be so brittle, it's so small and cute. I can't imagine welding on something so small.

Hard to believe that little tiny thing has been known to cause the KLR engine to implode...

'04 KLR. The doohickey looked fine, but I wouldn't trust that thin metal & pitiful weld...

How was the spring, and did you check to see if it was operational before removal?

I finally had the time to do the DOO and now it's done. Woke up at 6 am started at 7 and was fniished at 8. Both the spring and adjuster were in tact but the system wasn't adjusting at all and there wasn't much tension on it. Basically I had to pry the old doohickey off and then wammo the spring did its job. Once. then it was completely relaxed. Much better running engine.
07 with 4800 miles.
