Changed my oil and filter and thought it was on tight enough and started my bike and leaked about a 1/2 quart out of the ring area of filter. thightend it up alot more and its fine. Do oil filter tight to a stop of just real tight?

Did you make sure the old o-ring wasn't still on the bike when you put on the new filter? That has happened to me before.

On most of my bikes I screw the oil filter on till it starts to meet resistance (won't spin freely anymore) and then as a rule of thumb tighten two more revolutions. On my GS on some filters I only get 1 3/4" turn before it's way too tight, but I've never had a problem.

Tighten as tight as you can by hand (clean any oil of hands or filter first).
This may not work for girls or "girly men"

Hand tight (as stated by chappy).
If any oil leaks, check the o-ring. (been there before)

hand tight plus 1/4 turn. I also wipe the gasket contact area with a clean cloth and wet the new filter gasket with some clean oil.
