I was not involved in the shooting but one of my deputies was. We still don't know how the baby got hit. Sometimes It really sucks being a cop.

A shootout in south Lafourche Parish Wednesday afternoon left an infant child and his father dead and a sheriff's deputy wounded, police said.

The shooting happened just after 1 p.m at a mobile home on West 136th Street in Galliano, Louisiana, according to Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Larry Weidel.

The deputy that was shot was wearing a bullet-proof vest and only suffered minor injuries.

According to Weidel, two sheriff’s deputies went to the mobile home to follow up on a complaint of an aggravated battery that had taken place there earlier in the day, and when they arrived, one of the deputies was shot in the shoulder by 39-year-old Dwain Dodge.

During the gunfire that ensued, Dodge and his infant son, Typhoon, were both killed.

The injured deputy received a severe bruise to his chest.

Police said Dodge had an extensive criminal history, with many previous arrests.

Ohhh man, that's rough. Sorry to hear about your deputy. I hope he heals quick. And it's really unfortunate about the kid, but it sounds like he's in better hands now than he was before.

What a tragedy. Some people are just so fricking stupid. It breaks my heart to hear the loss of a child.

Police work is tough! There is not always a clear path. This can cause one to second guess themselves for years/decades. The safety of the public lays in the hands of all LEOs...However the ultimate safety of the child lays in the hands of the scumbag father. Whether he was using him as a shield or just failed to ensure his safety, pop is ultimately responsible!

LEOs can suffer PTS(post traumatic stress) from a perfectly justified shooting. Symptoms can last for years, turning their personal life upside down. I hope all officers involved heal from any mental scars as well as the physical ones.
