I am looking at getting a 99 GSXR 750 but the owner says the trans is slipping. What causes this? Any idea on repair cost?

Thanks in advance.

How many miles on the bike? It could be just the clutch? How much is he asking?

a little over 9k on the clock. He is asking $3.500. The bike has been garage kept and is immaculate except for the slip.

9000 miles is nothing, unless the bike has been wrecked or abused.

You NEED to find out what he means by "slipping"; does the bike run and shift OK, but the clutch slips on acceleration (revs rise but the bike doesn't go any faster) or does the bike POP out of gear or not shift properly (false neutrals) when shifted and power is applied.

The first is caused by poor clutch ajustement ( $0 ), or a fried clutch (a couple hundred bucks);

The latter can be caused by a. Stuck shift detent mechanism ($100 or so) b. bent shift forks (couple hundred) c. damaged gears or dogs (many hundreds, depending on if busted parts have been floating around doing other damage.)

If the bike shifts poorly (stiffly) because the clutch is dragging (and with that few miles, it has sat a LOT and may be munged up), it may be simply a case of sit-itus,; fixed with an oil change and a little riding.

"Slipping trans" by definition is the clutches slipping in an automatic trans. Manual trans. don't slip. They are gears connected to gears. Something is probably wrong with it or it has a fried clutch. Have the bike checked out by a tech if you can.

It is not uncommon for the hot rod zuks to slip the clutches when the bikes heats up. They act like a slider or slipper clutch when you call on them. If they slip and then catch a hold probably the disk are not fried. If you have a hyd. activated clutch instead of a cable check the actuator rod for chain lube crude. Also you can look at the type of oil you are using. Not going there with oil types but motorcycle oil contains an additive for wet clutches. I cannot run just any old oil and surely not man made oil ,syn, in my modified bandit 12. Last but not least you may install barnett hd. clutch spring assy. good luck Alan

Thanks for all the input guys but I passed on the bike. Turned out that it was not slipping but was missing 2nd gear completely.

Where is the bike located? Can you get me some pics or point me in the direction of the seller?
