View Full Version : DSRL Shoot Out

JayD came up with a pretty good idea. There's a bunch of us on here who are avid shooters and we all know that a few hours of shooting is just as fun as a few hours of riding. How about we set up a shooting get-together? I'm a member of the Southern Shooting Center here in Thibodeaux, but for non-members it's $20 an hour or something like that. I know there are other outdoor ranges that are cheaper (or free), so post them up along with any dates that ya'll might want to do something.

Right now I'm good for July 1st or the following weekend on the 7th or 8th. Also, most weekdays till the 11th I'm available, but I know most have the J.O.B.

Whats the game?
Long range 800-1000 yds with optics?
Long Range 300-500 yds Iron sites?
Tactical Pistol Match?
I need to know what tools of destruction to bring... I should be in for this one.

Ritten
06-25-2007, 09:44 PM
Hell man, come prepped for all of them. It's going to depend on where we're at, but regardless, I'll have at least my tactical sticks with me. Long ranges might be a little harder to come by unless we can find some open acreage to have this. I might be able to do something on my hunting lease in Columbia, MS if we can't find anything more suitable. If we do that, then be sure to load up the 4 wheeler and/or dirt bikes as well!

Pistols... If we go to Thibadoux, we can maybe set up a IPSC match of a NRA Action Pistol course. Long range I'll bow for now unless I can shoot the SKS with iron sights.

I say pistols.... Next weekend?

I am in

Ted, where was that place you said I could buy reactive steel plates in Houma?

btw, to those that want to come but don't have any or enough firearms and want to come
Go buy a few boxes of ammo in 38 or 357 or 44mag or 45acp or 9mm or 40cal and we'll have a gun you can shoot with

Wanna shoot rifles

Go to Academy or Wally world, pick up a few boxes and C'mon down

New to shooting?
Ted and I have a coupla target pistols or rifles to start ya on in 22cal

Ritten
06-25-2007, 10:14 PM
Shooting pistols down here would be cool, but they don't let non-members shoot the steel targets. Paper, rapid fire, practical scenarios, and all of that is fine though. I don't think it matters what you're shooting. Hell, I'd be throwing grenades if my throwing arm was half accurate! I'll make the same offer as JayD. Anyone who wants to feel what a Desert Eagle .50 feels like to shoot, skip a week's worth of food and buy a few rounds.......I promise that any stress you walked up with before will be COMPLETELY gone after you pull the trigger!!

JayD....I believe I saw some of the smaller caliber steel flippers in Academy, but I know that Houma Auto has some. They also have the bigger/thicker plates for the rifles up to 22-250 I believe. I'd shoot .223 at it, but nothing steel core if you know what I mean.

I'm in for July 1st...Honey Island swamp is $6.00 for the entire day. They have a 25 yard pistol range and 100 yard rifle/pistol range, but I am open to where y'all want. If it is pistols only, I can ride da bike there!

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office range in Raceland is open to the public Fri, Sat and Sunday. I think it is $5.00 to shoot all day. 50 yard pistol range with some steel targets. 100 yard rifle range. Ya'll give me a date and I should be able to set something up. We have an academy going on right now that sometimes takes up the range on Sat so sun may be a better day.

It's 10.00 a day for non LEO and worth it, nice range
The 3 times I've been there we almost had the place to ourselves
(unlike most ranges where you may have to wait for a lane when their busy)

This sounds pretty cool. My Baby Eagle should just fit in the new tank bag.

I'm too damned lazy to go out and buy a license somewhere, but I found that at the LA DWF site,

https://www3.wildlifelicense.com/la/start.php

you can purchase the required license on line and print a temp pass that is good until the permanent one shows up.

http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/licenses/licensewizard/

That is the site that has a little questionaire that will confirm what type of stamp you need. I think it said that the full year pass to shoot but not hunt was only $5.50.

I was going to suggest this also. The range is really nice and most times not very busy. Just don't go out there the few weeks before deer season unless you bring your pillow for the night before.

Wherever we end up shooting is going to be a blast!! Nick and I went "buss a few caps" at Precision in B.R. this afternoon and enjoyed spooking the locals with some unusual shooting methods and firepower. The ammo that I chose to run through the DE puts out a serious concussion and a flame a good 3' long! Fun shooting as I call it.

I'll have a new gun to shoot on Sunday as well. I found the one I've been looking for JayD! Nick was schooled on the finer points of gun shopping today. It's just like Wal-Mart......you can't leave with ONLY what you went in for.

According to the NRA range site:

Raceland - Lafourche Sheriff's Firing Range, 2650 Highway 90 West, Raceland, LA 70301.
Phone: 504-449-4480
Facilities include: Outdoor Pistol (2-50 yds), Outdoor Rifle (100-200 yds), Rifle Silhouette, Pistol Silhouette
Range Access: Public

Here's an ignorant question:

If you don't have a concealed carry permit, is there an acceptable way to transport a handgun so as not to be arrested immediately upon arrival at the Sheriff's Firing Range? (That kind of drama, I'm fairly certain, we don't need.)

Yup, we'll also beat the afternoon summer thunderstorms that way.

Austin, the physical address is 2650 Highway 90 West, Raceland, LA 70301 but it's really simple to find. From your house you'll come across the causway, take I-10 West and in Kenner turn off on to I-310south heading towards Houma. I-310 dead ends into Hwy 90 and you then want to head west. You'll pass through Paradis, Des Allemands, and you'll cross over Hwy308 and Hwy1. The next exit after Hwy 1 is hwy3198 (old hwy 90). Take the exit and turn left to go back underneath the overpass and you will see the range about a quarter mile down on your left. It's the only thing for miles around so you can't miss it.

Not a bad question at all. In Louisiana your motor vehicle (including motorcycles) is considered an extension of your home. You can legally carry a loaded weapon INSIDE your vehicle without a concealed carry permit. If you're on the bike and have no way to store it, and you'll be wearing the firearm, just make sure it's visible on the outside of your clothing and you should be fine. Personally, if I'm just transporting a handgun across state lines on the bike, then I separate the ammo and the gun in two different compartments. I'd rather not be wearing it if I were to be in a wreck.

DannyT may be able to answer if a gun carried in a backpack on a motorcycle is concidered a concealed weapon or not. Or does it change whether it's loaded or unloaded?

Thats a good question. I had to think about that one. I think that as long as you are riding the bike it should be OK to have the gun in the back pack but once you get off of the bike and walk around with the back pack then you are carrying a conceled weapon.

Well in that case, aren't we all carrying concealed weapons when we get out of our cars and have our guns inside of their carrying cases? I don't think anyone would mess with you, but I know NO deer hunter with a $1000 scope is going to just throw their rifle into the back seat.

AWESOME time today guys!!!! For all of you who didn't make it.......you missed one HELL of a shooting gallery. We lined up 4 - AR-15's and emptied 120 rounds in a matter of seconds at random man-eating plastic bottles that were threatening our very existence. Steel plate competitions were held, almost any caliber made in a handgun was fired, and the unfathomable concussion of the .50ae was experienced. We even came across a suicidal dragonfly. It was Brettmat's debut appearance and he got to experience a bit of the DSRL flavor along with JayD, Lonehorn, 2Evil4U and myself. Four hours of shooting will surely relieve some stress and we rolled out just as the rain started to fall around noon. Good seeing everyone again!

JayD and 2Evil4U shot a bunch of really good pictures and video, so hopefully that'll make it up soon. Sorry Juicebox......I forgot my camera.

You know, this may be blasphemy to say this on a Bike site but I think I enjoy shooting with my riding buds more than riding with them

Prolly doesn't make any sense, huh?

When we ride, we are essentially alone (in formation)

Shooting, we are ragging, teasing and complimenting on each others shooting......which is a blast
We spent half our time BSing

Next shoot will be closer to baton rouge so that Kev and Juice aint got no excuse for not coming ;)

That was awesome. That camera takes pretty good video for net sized viewing! Too bad it can't portray the feeling of being within 20 feet of that many rounds being fired at once!!

Dude, the vid of you shooting the 50 is awesome
If you slow the vid down, the Desert Eagle almost standing up 90 degrees and it caught you getting beaned in the head with an empty, only problem is this file is a MOV vid and my puter doesn't want to allow me to turn the vid right side up or allow me to slow the vid down in Windows movie maker :(

My schedule is starting to get really "ify" after this week, but I should be home next Sunday as well. After that, there's no telling as I may go offshore for two weeks, three weeks, or end up being home for another week. Regardless, if ya'll decide to have a shoot out closer to B.R. then I'm sure they'll have more guys participate to make up for my absence.

Aaron may even get to break in his brand new Desert Eagle in .50ae by then!! :DUZI

Hmmmmm. You already have one of those. I'm thinking something bigger...

Now I'm deciding if I just want a really loud toy, or something that might actually be useful.

If I can pull this off it's going to cost me a lot of shoes, regardless.Frying12Whipo

great day guys! Aaron and Brett, it was a pleasure to meet y'all. JayD, Ted it was great hanging out with you all again. I haven't had that much fun in a long time. needless to say, addictions and wants can be developed very quickly with some of the toys that were on display today. thanks to everyone for coming out and letting me join you all. i'm already looking forward to the next time.

btw, isn't it funny to see the expression of others on the range when the .50 starts to go "bang...bang"? i think i saw several cases of whiplash develop from guys on the other end of the range.

That does look like fun.

What would be a good inexpensive (not cheap) pistol for someone who has never owned a pistol? The other day i went by Precision(sp?) and Jim's and checked some out. Some of the 9mm's seemed nice. Any thoughts anyone?

hehehe.....we were discussing this just yesterday.

Guns are A LOT like motorcycles. What you plan on doing with it will dictate what type of gun, brand, caliber, and quality that you should look for. Also, not to sound too much like a safety nazi, but I recommend it to everyone who's looking to get into shooting for the first time. The NRA basic pistol course is WONDERFUL at explaining the guidelines, differences, and proper technique of pistol shooting and safety. It's the same course that's required for the concealed handgun permit from the state of Louisiana. Bill Hickman teaches it in Thibodaux for $75 (not affiliated with him, just giving info.) for a full day of instruction and you'll walk away with more knowledge than most.

All of that said, if you're looking for a 9mm, and just want something to go to the range and plink with, you've got a world of choices for $300-$500. If you're looking to use it for home protection as well, you can't go wrong with a Glock. A DAO (double action only) pistol is simple, reliable, and pretty darn accurate out of the box and you can find used ones in great shape all day long for $400-$500. Revolvers will serve you just as well if that's what you're into, and can be had in most calibers. Like a bike, you just want to get out there and see what fits YOU best, first and foremost. At Precision there in Baton Rouge, go and rent a couple of different styles/brands and you'll learn what you like a lot quicker.

Sounds like you need a "Raging Bull" if your are gonna out do the .50 I believe it is the most powerful handgun in production. I believe it is a Taurus.

Actually.....the Raging Bull series from Taurus comes in a few different calibers. One of which is the .500 magnum which Smith and Wesson developed. There's a handfull of companies who make revolvers in .500 S&W including the original Smith & Wesson and Magnum Research who makes the Desert Eagle. But yes, depending on barrel legnth, the muzzle energy of the .500 S&W is stronger than the .50ae. You just can't get it in an auto.....Bable12

A friend of mine from Raceland owns the Raging Bull .500 Taurus and I have shot it a few times. He was going bear hunting in Yukon and , by law, had to carry a back-up pistol of a certain size. So for his Birthday his wife went to Houma Auto Parts and asked "What is the most powerful handgun?" I don't know how he was so lucky as to find her but NO, she doesn't have a sister. I have one of the empty casings and it is all most as long as my 30 06 rounds but is even LARGER in "girth", as the ladies say.

This is what I meant about power compaired to the AE:

Where does the Magnum Reaserch Desert Eagle MarkXIX .50AE rank among the
world's most powerful handguns? - Thank You, Thomas K.

The .50 AE is behind the 454 Casull which, in turn, is less powerful than the new S&W 500 Magnum.

The .50 Action Express was developed to add more performance to the Desert Eagle, which had been designed to chamber the 44 Rem Mag. The trick was to use the same rim size as the 44 Mag to make all the internals of the Desert Eagle function with only the need for a change of barrel. That's why the .50 AE has a rebated rim.

.50 AE uses a 300 grain bullet at 1580 Feet per second resulting in a muzzle energy of 1568 Foot Pounds.

454 Casull with a 240 grain bullet fires at 1916 Feet per second creating energy of 1955 Foot Lbs.

Currently there are 3 loads from Corbon available for the 500 Magnum:

The "light" load is a 275-grain Barnes X copper hollowpoint bullet. Muzzle velocity is 1665 fps and it produces 1668 ft.-lb. of energy.

A 400-grain jacketed softpoint at 1675 fps and 2500 ft.-lb. of energy is available for larger game.

Those heading to Alaska or Africa will want the 440-grain hard-cast lead, gas checked, flat point load. At 1625 fps and 2580 ft.-lb. of energy. It's the new Dirty Harry handgun.

I am not knocking the AE, it is an awesome gun, I have wanted one since I first saw Pulp Fiction and after watching Snatch I remembered why!

I highlighted the key point for you. Does this help?

ONE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED TWENTY-FIVE FEET PER SECOND

and

TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED EIGHTY FOOT POUNDS OF ENERGY

What this means is if you are a bad shot you don't need to worry if you ONLY hit a robber in the foot. His leg will come off with the foot as he flies back a few feet!

Mmmmmm.... not really. See Newton's 3rd law of motion. Higher probability is that the round will end up hitting somebody waaaay down the road after running through the next few houses down the block.

Good point.....In real world purposes most people only NEED a 9mm or 45 at most. However, it sure is fun shooting those big bastards. Just don't ask me to buy the rounds!
