Well now that my dad and I both have plane tickets booked and this great "father son" trip planned, the fucking seller is backing out of the sell!
I am greatful for his honesty though. He went to pay the bike off and get the title from the bank. They haven't received it still and so he called the DMV. It seems there is some lost paperwork and they have to refile the whole thing. They are thinking it will take several weeks before it comes in now. He doesn't want to sell it to me without the title in hand and has offered for me to keep the Garmin 2730 as a gift for my troubles and he'll also bring my dad and me to the BMW dealer there who has a used 1200RT my dad wants and a couple used GS with under 10k on them. However, these bikes are bone ass stock.
So if anyone finds a GS for sale in the Maine/NH/Mass/Ny area shoot me a PM quickly.
This situation.BS.

If he is willing to pay me for me flight and my dad hasn't paid for his flight yet (standby ticket) should I wait on this bike? Should I be patient and fly out there once he does have the title in hand? Is it that great of a deal to wait for?
HELP!!!!

Do what you want, if you want to wait wait.... If you want to get a bike now vs. whenever this all gets cleared up go get one...... I would just watch for them. Been seeing a few pop up here and there. Meanwhile will be riding. That does suck though... but you did get a free GPS out the deal huh?

It's really based on time. When do you want "the bike"?
If you are die-hard about this bike, and the seller seems to be a very up-front person, you should wait. From the looks of it, you would be getting a good price even if you have to wait an extra month or two.
If you want a bike in the near future (have some big trips planned or you'll be entering a period where you won't get to ride in the near future) I would continue the search. If you go this route you will have to relegate yourself to the fact that you won't probably won't find a bike as decked out as that one any time soon. You might have to just settle for a good deal on a bike and make it a "FleaMarket" bike like Kevin's. Or just deck it out with the stuff you want.
Your biggest enemy and friend in this case is time... How much of it do you have to spend?

Now that's interesting...
Price of brand new bike plus basic farkles - used resale value = Cost of a vacation to Alaska with friends.
Must have have a lot of discretionary cash to make that justifiable. But definitely a great deal for the person following behind to grab it up (hint, hint...). I wonder how long it will take him to get tired of the touring Harley...

There is no particular reason for the seller to delay the sale waiting on the title. If he gives you a bill of sale and keeps a copy for himself, he is covered liability-wise. He can forward the signed title, dated to correspond with the bill of sale, via FedEx or whatever when the DMV paperwork catches up. This actually is a pretty common problem I see all the time.
You can insure the bike with the VIN number on the bill of sale document.

Damn she looks like she has seen better days. I think the ADV model is too large for me at 5'9" and 170. As it was, I could barely tiptoe on one foot while riding Ted's GS.
I have talked with the buyer more and he WILL NOT sell it with out title. He is worried that I will run into problems driving it back through several states back here.
As of right now he is going to cover our plane tickets and I'm going to wait until the title comes in.
So it looks as though I won't have a GS until a month or so. I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks.....

Well, if that works out, ok. Again I would suggest that the guy simply ask his attorney the question. Giving you a title and a Bill of Sale is the same esential thing as having only the bill of sale document in hand for the trip. Any LEO that does an inquiry will show it in the seller's name pending the title transfer being made in Louisiana. The bill of sale only will suffice legally for driving the machine back pending receipt of the title document and registration within 15 days of purchase and return to LA.
Oh well.... !

As of right now the DMV found the manufacturer orgin papers they were missing. So we are planning on flying there on the 14th.
If the title isn't in by than, what should I get other than the bill of sale and copy of the sellers drivers license. I am mainly worried about the tranport back. We will be taking about five days back through several eastern states without any plates.
I plan on calling the local DMV here on Monday but you know how helpful their are most times.

As far as motorcycles, riding without plates generally won't draw too much attention (compared to speeding, wheelies, stoppies, etc.). If you do get pulled over the key things you will want are a motorcycle endorsement on your license (you do have that right?), an insurance card (again, all you'll need is the VIN and model year/make to get this), and a Bill of Sale (probably notarized) to show the officer you own the bike. They'll run the bike VIN to make sure it hasn't been reported stolen and after that the only dealings you'll have with them is any signings for whatever ticket you might be up for.
Once you get to LA (since this is your state of residence) you will want to get a temp tag asap since if you continue to get pulled over and the cop sees how much time has passed since the Bill of Sale (not sure how long you have to register in this state) was signed they can write you up.

Glad it's all going through man. Like Shaq said, I wouldn't think you'd have much of a problem from LEO's as long as you're not thrashing that thing or staying on the back wheel. I know how you love to pull those long 3 inch high wheelies for up to 5 feet at a time, but the torque on the GS will REALLY lift it if you're not careful....haha. Ya'll enjoy it and let me know if you have any questions on your way back. I may or may not be home, but you can try.

I agree with shaq... I mean think about how many sportbike riders don't have plates on or have them tucked so far under there not visable...
take a white piece of cardboard and cut it in the size of a license plate and write LOUISIANA - IN TRANSIT or something on it in block print to where it looks somewhat official and no one will notice its not a plate maybe?

Thanks guys.
Yeah mini, I don't ride with a plate mounted on my 954. However, on that bike there have been several u-turn, back door, switch-up times where, let's say, I took a different route than the LEO expected me to pull over to. I don't think I'll be running from anyone on the GS.
You're right Ted, it might be hard for me to keep this one's wheel on the ground!haha
If I need ya on the way back, I'll give you a shout.
I don't really expect anybody to give a RT and GS a hard time. I was just trying to cover my ass as much as possible.

Some states (like Mississippi) don't even require a temp tag, so as long as you hang on to your Bill of Sale you will be good-to-go.
Congrats. I am glad things worked out for you. One of the best experiences I have had on a bike was my first trip with my dad. Even though it was a short trip up to TN (Honda Hoot), not even my longest adventure ride can compare to the feeling of sharing something like that with family.

Don't call the DMV, they are idiots..
Don't worry as much about the paperwork, really....
Whenever you purchase the vehicle (in whatever state you are in) you are subject to the laws, rules and regulations of YOUR HOME STATE! Once you buy the vehicle, in Louisiana, you have 40 days to register until you will be assessed and late fees of penalties. Most states give you 7 working (business) days such as Mississippi.
What you actually need:
A certified (notarized) Bill of Sale
You drivers license (showing your motorcycle endorsement)
and to be safe - a copy of all of the prior owners documents ( showing where the bike originated) and your current ins card.
Other than that, I would call my ins company and inform them of the upcoming purchase and general make and model of the bike and see what they say.
read this, it might help (http://www.dps.state.la.us/omv/ttl/title.html)
Other than that, for some reason if you get pulled over (for doing one of those famous "stoppies" or wheelies) just be upfront with the trooper. If you got your ducks in a row, no problems. The problem lies when you DO NOT have you shit together, because it presents to the trooper that you are trying to "cover or hide" something.
How do I know? Well 10 yrs of playing Po-Po helps (5 city / 5 state)
Now then... Shut up and RIDE dammit!!!!

Jason, for what it's worth, I drove a truck from Ca to TX that had no LP or inspection sticker at all. I was pulling a trailer that had no LP at all. No problems at all, not even when a trooper pulled along side to check out all the toys.
