State police say 20-year-old Cody Cormay is dead after smashing his motorcycle into a car along Old Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge Wednesday evening. The motorcycle's gas tank exploded and both it and the car burst into flames.

Troopers say Cormay was thrown from the motorbike and died at the scene. Witnesses say he was heading down Old Jefferson at a high rate of speed, when the driver of the car pulled out into the roadway from Briar Place and right into the path of the motorcylce.

Gas from the motorcylce covered the driver of the car and he caught fire. Passersby pulled him out of the car and tried to put out the flames. When they couldn't, they grabbed him and threw him into a ditch full of water. He was transported to a hospital in an unknown condition, but is receiving treatment for burns.

One of the people who stopped to help twisted his ankle getting up from the ditch and paramedics also had to take him to a hospital. The name of the driver of the car has not been released.

CHECK THIS SHIT OUT. Talk about Deja Vu

Deadly Motorcycle Crash Deja Vu for One Woman

Aug 16, 2007 05:38 PM
Familiar Motorcycle Crash Nightmare

A young motorcyclist is dead and another man is in serious condition at a burn unit. They were injured in Wednesday night's fiery crash on old Jefferson Highway. WAFB's Caroline Moses found out this is not the first time a biker has died in this very same spot.

Many people in the Briar Place subdivision say leaving to go out onto Jefferson Highway is a daily risk. One woman says she even tried to contact DOTD for help, but she says the problem was clearly never solved. Chipley Burch says, "When you look to your left, you're blocked by trees and bushes, and I really think need to remove those because it's hard to see around the bend when somebody is speeding." Burch lives in Briar Place, but when she came home Wednesday night, she walked into a familiar nightmare. She says, "The car was similar to one of my sons and I was really scared and panicking."

All Burch knew was someone died when a motorcycle crashed into a car. She soon realized her son was not the one inside the car, but it was someone she knew. As it turned out, the driver was her neighbor's husband. Burch says, "I brought her to the hospital and they are Katrina refugees, lost everything in New Orleans two years ago and just bought in the neighborhood one year ago." The victim, 50-year-old Jonathan Lewis, had been badly burned. Two men pulled him from his car window while he was still on fire, and put him into a ditch of water. It is believed those actions are probably the only reason he is still alive.

Burch says the most frustrating part of this nightmare is that she has lived that same kind of accident before. "I started to panic because I re-lived what happened to me and people around me saying motorcycle involved and fatality and just going through again and thinking could have been avoided." Burch hit a motorcycle in the same spot about a year ago. She says trees blocked her view and she never saw him coming. The motorcyclist in that crash died as well. She says, "I froze in time again, seeing all the lights."

Burch says her neighbors' car was only a week old, and they were just starting to put their lives back together. She says, "The gentleman was going to CVS to get bottled water. You think such major change in life would not happen just pulling out of your neighborhood." State police do not think drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, but 9NEWS did find out the 20-year-old motorcycle driver, Cody Cormany, had been involved in a fatal accident two months earlier on O'Neal Lane. At that time, he was driving a car.

woah thats crazy! katy and I just google maped the address (using the # on the mailbox... highway 73, baton rouge, la) and it corrected it to prairieville... looked on the map... thats less then 4000 ft from my parents house! My parents drive down that stretch of road DAILY :(

Greg, I agree Google does the same thing when I use that numerical, but that is WAY into Prairieville and while I understand the news is never 100% accurate, it would take an idiot to confuse that location with Baton Rouge.

Anyone know where Briar Place is? Google can't locate it.

And here is an eyewitness account of the May 2006 incident...

Well it happened again last nite and Penny & I were eye witnesses and only
10 feet from the point of impact. A young "crotch rocket rider from
Gonzales named Kyle Browning died today as a result of an accident caused by
a woman pulling out in front of him. It happened at 7:30 pm at Jefferson
Highway and Briarplace Subdivision (where WE live) Penny & I were leaving to
go to Pastime for LA Rider and stopped at end of subdivision road behind
van driven by middle aged mother of 5 who also lives in my subdivision. She
stopped at stop sign and then slowly pulled out turning left directly into
the path of the kid. 20-25 yrs old maybe. As she pulled out I looked left
and saw the bike and screamed "Here it comes." The Kid was on his brakes
so hard that he was standing on only the front tire when he impacted the van
IN HIS LANE. The bike flew 20 feet, he flew 40-50 ft and was so high that
when he landed his body actually bounced up about 1 1/2 ft before sliding
and landing again. MAN IT WAS HORRIBLE!! I rushed to him and called 911
, Penny went to the van cause I told her not to come to me. Kid was not
breathing and then after about a minute he started breathing on his own but
you could hear he had internal injuries. The ambulance took him away still
breathing and police and state troopers arrived. "I NEVER SAW HIM" was
what she said to me and Penny. Lady was read her rights and taken to Troop
A last nite to be booked since a Sergeant with State Police was there
presumption was kid was dead. dunno when he died but Troop A did tell Penny
at 10:00 am today he didn't make it. Nothing in paper today about & not on
news.--Go figure Ironically Penny & I stayed at scene until about 9:30 and
came home turned on TV and there was Col. Champagne, Mert Smiley and the
rest at state capital proclaiming May Motorcycle Awareness Month.....THEY
JUST DON'T SEE US ....BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!!!!

Glenn Dugas

and a susequent letter dated May 2006 to our Mayor of BR from the President of MAC ...

Mayor Holden

The following is an email from Glenn Dugas a member of MAC. If you remember you and I talked (Marva Wright Concert) about the lack of media coverage during May Motorcycle Awareness Month. This is the second crash in a little more than a week in Baton Rouge that we know about. I have talked to 2 of the TV Stations about your PSA. The response was the PSA are being played 4 or 5 times in 24 hours. We have not seen any.
We have also noticed the newspaper is failing to recognize motorcyclist crashes.
The people need to understand the seriousness of this situation.

Can you help?

Motorcycle Awareness Campaign

So does this intersection need a traffic signal or a 3-way stop or something?

We can't just do nothing!!!
