So, I was planning out my farkle strategy for 2007 (yeah, it's as corny as it sounds...) and the thought of a flip-up helmet came to mind. I haven't gone to try one on but I wanted to get some input for those who have them (or have researched them extensively). Looking for info on...
- Crashability. Have you wrecked in one and how did you come out of it (I'm assuming if you're posting you made it out alive but as far as concussion or head injury did you have any bad side-effects?)
- Comfort. I figure these will be heavier than a nice full-face. But how heavy does it feel on your head? Does the front flip portion cause you any discomfort in any situations?
- Farkleability (yes, that's a new word). How easy is it to set these up with speakers and/or microphones? Can you wear ear headphones easily in they (I would hope they wouldn't affect wearing ear plugs).

Flip up aka Modular Helmet.
Never Wrecked with mine, however saw some pics of one in the AeroStich catalog and it held up well. He slid on his face after being hit by a deer. It was a Nolan.
There not that much heavier... maybe a few ounces. I think they are very practical and I like them. Really nice in the heat to open up at traffic lights to wipe sweat off your face... etc. Or when talking to someone when you stop you can just flip it up and communicate.
I haven't gotten to the point to need all the farkles in the helmet.... So I don't know or have any comments on that......

I like mine for about the same reasons Kev mentioned.
As far as mics and speakers, Alton Brown was wearing one with a boom mic in the feast on asphalt series so I assume it can be done.

I had a Nolan N100E Outlaw that I loved with the exception of one aspect. It's FREAKING LOUD!!!!!!!! On the GS it wasn't that bad, but on a sportbike or on the Futura I couldn't stand it. Compared to the Shoei Z-II it was a loudspeaker. I liked the functionality of it though, and in the summer it's great. Way too drafty for temps below 50 however.
Never crashed in mine either.

I have an HJC Flipup anb I am very happy with it. Never crashed in it but for the price it is very quiet an comfortable. But I hear they don't do too good in a crash.

I have an HJC modular and I love it, I've had a slow speed crash in it in some soft mud and it held up fine... don't know how much that helps.

I have a HJC modular to. Most people say modular helmets in general are not as quiet as regular full face helmet. I wear eyeglass's and to me that is the main benifit. Also, i can make a quick pit stop at store with out taking off and putting helmet back on.
I was wearing it last year when i had a little get off on my Ninja 500 on Florida Blvd. by the community college.
I have a bad habit of setting it on the seat of my bike sometimes. It has fallen off twice and is now a little dinged up.
Also, it's getting a little old and kind of loose fitting. I'm going to be checking out the Shoei modular soon.

I have the Shoei Syncrotec. Love it. It's not heavy, or noisy. I tried speakers but didn't like the feel of them inside the helmet. The speakers that I bought were bulky.

After returning from my East coast trip to get my bike and riding four 500 to 600 mile days in the freaking triple digit heat I was thinking about a modular also.
Both of my current helmets, Aria ans Suomy, have the "side caps" over the shield mounts and are very loud b/c of them. These have been my most comfortable helmets but my Shoei was the most quiet.
As far as speakers, on this trip I just used a simple pair of earbud headphones plugged into the GPS. Just squeezed them in BEHIND the helmet straps and put them wherever they were comfortable. I have found that this is possible with EVERY helmet I've ever owned.

You just finished the ride report on the other thread. There isn't to much to report or take a picture of when you slab it 2,000 miles.
Pics of bike will be up by Friday, PROMISE!

I stopped by lightspeed today with the best intention to purchase a new modular helmet. After trying on a few of the flip models they just didn't feel very safe. I gave in to temptation and came home with the new Icon Decay Domain instead.

Congrats Juice...killer looking lid!!! I have tried both the Nolan and HJC "flip" helmets and both were pretty noisy and became very loose fitting only after a few months. BUT, I do like them around town.

Let us know how loud/quiet that thing is with all those vents/wings.
