was in a dirt bike accident today at his house. We got the ambulance out thee to come get him but upon evaluation of him and seeing what looked to be his forearm and collarbone broken and blood dripping out of his ear, they decided to get him out by helicopter. After his scans and x-rays they found that he broke some ribs, cracked his C5 and C7 vertebra and cracked the base of his skull. He still can't feel his arm and they are running more tests to figure out why. I'll know more tomorrow...I'll keep everyone updated. Keep him in your prayers!

Joey called and told me the news last night. I wish you a speedy recovery Mr Wayne. The pain that you are feeling now is nothing compared to the pain your wife is going to dish out when she gets you back home.

Uuuummm, yeah....not gonna happen! I think divorce or murder may be in the mix if there's ever another one in the future!

UPDATE: He will be in ICU for a couple of days. No surgery expected. He will be in a special collar for 3 months solid...no taking it off, not even to take a shower! He will also be undergoing some Occupational therapy as well.

Heal up quick. I am sure there is another bike in your future somewhere!

When the neurosurgeon told mom "There is no trauma to the brain", her reply was "Wait till i get done with him".

I told them that checking his head out was good, but if they wanted to check his brain out, they would need a proctologist!

Seriously, the good news is his arm and collar bone are fine. However, his skull is cracked in two place, and two vertebrae are cracked. Ribs are broken and a nerve in his left shoulder has his left arm unusable and hurting. He can wiggle his fingers but thats about it. Hes in good spirits, but hurting as you can imagine.

We're going to let him tell you all what happened as we wasnt there till after.

Not exactly and that's EXACTLY why he's in the position he's in! So when he gets outta the hospital and is able to take some heat, well, I won't need to give him any because between Joey and his wife...he'll have about all the "shit-giving" he can take! But the first time I see him out on anything without a helmet in my yard,....well, I might not be his favorite daughter-in-law anymore!!

Ouch, What in the hell happened? Was he wearing a helmet?

Yeah, the ENT doc cleaned out his ear, his eardrum is still intact, but bones in his ears are broken so they say they don't know if he'll ever hear outta that ear. It's a wait and see type deal.
He's still in ICU, he has turned combative and they had to restrain him to the bed monday night. Come to find out the lortab they were giving him was causing him to hallucinate and get real ornary! He still hasn't snapped out of it yet, but the doctor said he will soon. So keep him in your prayers for a quick recovery and for Peggy to not hurt him when he snaps out of it! :)

Any updates Steph/Joey ?

Well, he has gotten a little more normal over the course of the day. He is able to comprehend that he is seriously injured again, but still wants that neck collar off. They were able to remove the straps tho! The doctor told mom that when he can move around on his own, he can go to a private room, and told dad that, and i quote, "If you behave in the normal room, you can go home 24 hours later". Hopefully the combative phase is over and he can commence to gettin' better!

AIGHT! Here they is. Pics of Wayne, the KTM and the tree that changed them both!. Some of them arent exactly work safe.

She says I don't wear enough protective equipment. I ride with full face helmet, leather gloves(sometimes), short pants and tee shirt. Yeah, sure, I could ride with some of that steel armor that the knights of old used to wear. OR I could just stay in bed! If I go down I hurt a little more than her:eek:. So what?

Hell, I can't even remember how many times I've been to the emergency room! The point: Who knows more about the consequences of falling? I got more broken bones than she has scratches

Add one more to that ER count. HAH! Here is the tree that got him!

Don't take offense, but your favorite daughter in law is smarter than you!

I wont even bother to point out the errors in your thinking as your mind is obviously set.

All I can say is ride safe brudda...and enjoy your skin while you still have it.

When someone goes down, and someone nearby has to react, call the ambulance, and watch you writhe in pain until they get there

That would be me, my brother, and our buddy LOL.

Keep reading, pics of the old fart are coming. Glad hes feeling better, cause hes gonna get a kick out of this *evil grin*

Oh, and here's a good one!

Sounds fair enough Cool12 BUT I see one problem not being addressed. I've been in that ambulance. I've seen the "writhe in pain".

Yep, you've been in that ambulance, AND that chopper alright. And you've BEEN that "writhe in pain" more than your fair share Hehehehehehe.

All fun aside, im glad my dad is home and getting better now. Maybe next time he will at least wear a helmet.

forgot one pic of the bike. The one that really tells the story of how hard he hit. We found the missing piece of the triple clamp about 30 feet beyond where pops landed. He was about 15 to 20 feet beyond where the bike hit the tree. The bike stopped instantly upon impact, it landed exactly where it hit.

It was one of those "just going to warm it up" things.

I wish I could remember what happened. All is a blank from 10 min before wreck until 5 days afterward, I don't know if I REAAALLLLY screwed up, throttle stuck open or what. I jus ain't that bad of a rider!

I don't see a complete report any where on here so I'll try.

Hereing in left ear - 100% loss at first. Back to about 50 now. May get better on it's own in time.

Left side of skull fractures - Healing nicely.

Tingling/burning in right fingers/arm - fusing C6 To C7 fixed that.

No control of left arm - This is due to stretching of nerves. Any and how much healing will be mystery. Only the nerves themselves and hard work with a p.t. get this side back to normal.

Misc. broke bones - healed/healing.

I think that is all.

3 months later: What a time for my depression med to quit working. A trip to a psychiatrist MAY have me on the right track again. Started rehab (P.T.) but had to quit long enough to have C7 fused to C6. Back in P.T. & O.T. now. Making very slow gains with left arm and hand. They are useless right now. Hope to get then back enough to get back in the saddle again.

Well, riding days are over. Left arm is dead except for some hand movement. Nerves are torn apart somewhere. Operation may be possible but would only give me minimal movement. Only 60% chance it would be succesful and long recovery period. Plus shoulder problems and and major sensitivity would make it useless any way. I see an orthopedic Dr. monday about the shoulder.

I'd like to address safety gear. In another thread I was giving my favorte daughter-in-law and others a ration of crap about safety gear. In real life I am a believer in safety gear. I exercised poor judgement that day. I was just warming up the bike for a friend to ride it. That being said, if I had put on a helmet it would have protected me from ear and skull fracturers. Can only guess if it would have done anything for C spine fracturers. The permanent injuries would most probably have occured. Tackling an oak tree at speed is not taken into consideration by safety gear manufacturers.

Todate I still don't know what went wrong. Poor riding I guess. Maybe an old man has no business on dirt bikes. Now this old man can't ride ANY bikes!:nopity:
