Since I have had to send my front Ohlins off I have been worried that the spray from the rear wheel might cause some long term issues with the rear Ohlins due to it not having any type of protection like the stock shock.

What do you guys think about this Best Rest part? If any other GS owners are interested in one I am pretty sure it could be duplicated by one of my friends here in Houma.

He has similar material and could copy the design before installation. So if anyone wants to go in on one with me I wouldn't mind splitting the cost.

There is also a link on their site for more pictures of the part installed. I know my bike will never look THAT bad but it could help protect the shock anyway.

Jason, dude Ride more, worry less! That bike, and your Ohlins are made to be used. I say ride it man! I don't think you need to worry about it.

Well once my front shock is back in installed I will ride it. I am just thinking that it could be some cheap insurance to protect the rear.

Don't worry, I'm not losing any sleep over it.

I just thought there might be a fellow GS owner or two out there who would be interested in splitting the cost to see how well it works.

Austin, Stu, Harland, Ted, Nick, anybody interested?

I think it's Gay

If you're that worried about your shock then put an el cheepo shock sock on it that you can find at any dirtbike shop and ride the piss out of it. I blew the seals on my stock rear shock after 1800 miles by riding the road and keeping things clean but my Wilburs is still going strong after 37,000 miles on it of plenty of mud, dust, gravel, rain, grime, sand and hardly ever being washed anymore.

Unless you're always riding in sand then I'd say it's not even worth the trouble. Get that some-bish dirty!!!!!!

I have the stock shock protector on mine. The only way I can see damaging the rear shock is to either

a) Ride like Austin. :)

b) Put on some sand tires (if they even make such a thing for that wheel size) and spend a few days roaming and romping on a beach.

There is definately no reason NOT to install such a protector as you posted. Let's face it, that protector weighs all of maybe 5 pounds. On a 450+ pound bike I don't think that is going to make or break your riding style.

I want my stock suspension to fail so I can solidify another reason to get some better stuff on there.

I say go for it. Get it powdercoated in gold to add more bling-factor to the bike (assuming its metal). :)

HEY! I resemble that remark!!!!

Jason,

The way I look at it is that if it can't handle a little abuse, it ain't worth having!!! I grew up in Vegas and spent 1000's of hours riding dirtbikes in the sand, mud, dirt and silt and never had a rear shock fail due to the environment. The only time I have ever had a shock or fork fail was due to rider exuberance or error. So, as everone else said, ride the beast and don't worry about it!!!!

Dood....

We need to change you name on here to Chicken Little!

I bought my shocks used with 22k HARD miles put on them. Hell, when I pulled them off of the bike they were dirty. I bolted them on and haven't looked back in the last 5k miles.
They have been thru water, a LOT of mud, hell, even some cow shit in the last month!!!

I could have put my factory shock cover on the Ohlins, but didn't think twice about it. Ride it and abuse it like goD and the engineers at Ohlins designed it to be used.....

Ok here's another questions then,

Ohlins recommends "service" to the shocks somewhere in the 12,000 to 18,000 mile range.

I know I'm nowhere near it, has anyone (Nick) done this service to their shocks. Ted does Wilburs recommend this as well?

in reality, any motorcycle shock needs to be "refreshed" after a certain period of time. The suspension oil breaks down over time and changes the suspension characteristics.

Should you get them serviced? Yes. When should you get them serviced? When you can really feel a drop off in performance from them. Manufacturer mileages estimates are just that, estimates.

Just ride the sumnabiatch.... :)

Of course! Any shock company is going to recommend that you send them money on a regular basis. HELL.....ANY company is going to recommend that you send them money for "maintenance". I look at it this way.....most shocks can go 30-40k miles without care or maintenance and then need to have seals replaced no matter if you kept it clean or not. Ride it and just rebuild it when needed. Stu said it all.

The manual says 30,000km or 18,641.14 miles for "recommended" service.

Just like BMW says "recommended" service intervals are 6,000 miles but some of us choose to change at 3,000.

Read my above post again.. If you feel uncomfortable, call Kyle Racing and ask them but I would just ride the everloving shit out of it...

Better yet. Save yourself some heartache and sell your bike!!!!

really..... sell you bike dood... You'll give an engineer a fucking migrane over these questions, literally...
