I am at home trying to re-install my front shock on the GS with a friend and we are ahving some problems.
The forks seem like they are over extended and won't slide back up. It feels like the inner tube is hitting the outer tube when you slide it up.
My search on ADV brought back some similar issues but all of those guys said they yanked on it and they went back in place. We yanked so hard we knocked the bike off the jack/center stand but it didn't fall in place.
I don't know where to go from here and would really appreciate any help/suggestions.
Here is my cell if anyone wants to call me. If it is long distance I can call you back so its on my dime.

I bet if you'd have done all of this at the tech day we'd have figured that out in no time huh?

I just finished putting my front Ohlins back in today. The front end got stuck in the extended position. It felt as though the inner tube was hitting on the outer tube, badly.
I had put straps under my top triple tree and was floating the front from the rafters in my shed. I did this b/c I didn't have the stock shock to put in place while waiting on the Ohlins to return. I believe this allowed the front to extend way to much.
Now on to the tip.....
We dropped it on to the tires and tried everything without ANY luck. I decided to roll it out of the shed and once the front end rolled down the 12" on 24" slope the front when back in all on its own! It just popped right in. I guess with the rear being 12" higher than the front it was just the perfect angle for it to go back.
I hope this might help......

so, if the front end unloads over uneven ground, like a wheelie like situation, a jump, or something similar, it will stick in the extended position, until it lands hard again on something? that doesn't sound right to me...

Not really. During normal riding you have the shock there to prevent the fork from over extending to the point that it gets situated in that position. I've never felt the front stick when coming off of a wheelie or jump. I have a feeling it has to do with the front end being lifted so high without the shock in place.

Correct correct
I had the bike's center stand on top of a 2" panel and the front was also strapped to the ceiling rafters. The front end was about 6" off the ground and to get the shock out you have to push the wheel down to clear the lower shock mount.
I pushed a little to hard and over extended the shocks but like Ted said, if the shock is in place it will hold the front end from extending that far.

ok.. so it was forced to that point, a jump or whatever wouldn't cause it.. ok got it...
