For the last 2 days, this web site has been extremely slow for me. All other sites are working as normal. Anyone else having the same problem?

I've noticed that it seems to go through periods where it's having a seizure and then it's fine. Usually it just times out when loading. I'll come back in 15-20 minutes and it's fine. Just did it a few minutes ago.

I think it is a hosting problem.........I will get Greg to work his magic.

Its a combination of 2 things... Yahoo! web server (they host the site) which is the primary problem... the server the site is on is extremely slow and their connectivity to the internet bandwidth-wise seems shaky at best...

Last night I did a backup of the server before implementing the current bike mods in case anything happened.... anything that requires the server to actually process something brings the site to a standstill for 20 minutes each operation... (I did a backup and then optimized the database tables and a couple other things) which probably bogged the server down from 6pm-midnight intermittently last night...

but the main issue is that of hosting.... unfortunately changing web hosts isn't an easy task.... it would probably end up meaning the board would be inaccessible for 24+ hours while DNS propagates and require a good 5 hours of labor to prepare and move it and get everything setup... and then if there are any bugs who knows how long it'd take to figure them out... so the short answer is there is really nothing we can do...

Hi Juice, system playing up big time today. Not letting me edit a post and then making double posts. Would it help if we donated some more $$ to buy more band width or fund a dedicated server? Shame a great site is been slowed by crap host

We have been through this time and time again over the past few years, but I can't ever recall it being this bad. Normally the problems come and go but for the past few weeks the hosting problem has been constant. My ultimate goal is to one day purchase our own server and manage it out of my home office. Unfortunately we do not have the monthly revenue needed that would support such an upgrade. I have been giving the hosting support team hell but not sure it will do us any good.

Dude, this sucks!. How much is a new server? You can count on me to chip in.

I have been slacking on my monthly contributions as well. Paypal sent.

New server is unattainable at this time. If you guys really want to help instead of donating $20.00-$50.00 every couple of months try to contribute a small amount monthly. Diversification is the key. I was thinking in the neighborhood of $8.00 to $12.00 monthly.

I am a member of several other forums and they all have an option called forum supporter. It automatically bills subscribed members every month. It is not required but just helps to remind members that just because you don't contribute doesn't mean that it is FREE!.

That option is already set up and in place but very few know about it. If you would like to subscribed shoot me a pm.

How much $$$ does it require to run DSRL monthly?

Juice

We operate off a line of credit. Since its inception every purchase is made on a credit card including the yearly software leases, graphic design, t-shirt and promotional products, monthly hosting and bandwidth fees. Sometimes we go 3-4 months without a single donation while other months may bring a couple of hundred bucks. For the most part it works out in the end but the line of credit is required so that i don't have any out of pocket. With the continuing line of credit our monthly operation cost is about $125.00 with every penny generated going 100% back into DSRL.

So, that $125 is for the current state of affairs?

Any idea what the ball park up-front would be to set up a stand-alone?

Not meaning to pry, I just have never given any of the backstory to this stuff much thought and I'm trying to run some numbers in my head.

We can lease a dedicated server for about $100.00 a month.

Found a server for sale. They say it only needs a Hard Drive. I think we could all chip in and buy us a 1 TB hard drive.

If all it needs is a hard drive and it can use a standard type like from Circuit I say lets go for it.

Here's a 250GB for $100 after rebates

Its not a PHYSICAL server we need... its the service... if you own your own server you have to pay for co-location service (where an internet company houses your server at their location)... the type of internet pipelines that are required to run a site like this are far faster than anyone has at their home and then most people here have at their offices... what Juice is refering to is a monthly package that usually runs around $100/mo which would provide us with the lease of a dedicated server and enough internet bandwidth and permissable traffic to host the site without delays... the problem is most likely occuring because the actual computer that hosts this site also hosts 50 others so during peak times if another site gets slammed with visits and we do too, the site crawls to a snail speed... if we paid for a dedicated server, we would only be constrained by the processor speed of that server...

ATM we don't really have the traffic or need for a dedicated server which is why we haven't made the switch over to one... The next step before we move over to that would likely be a different type of account with a hosting company which would mean that the server we were physically located on would host only 15 sites compared to the 50 we are sharing it with now (those #'s aren't exact but rather approximations)
