This is (was) the spark plug from the right cylinder. That is the same cylinder that Kevin had the valve issue. My guess is it sucked a valve.aswerfg
So what do y'all think?

That was the valve job that took two attempts, no?

Total bummer man. That looks like a serious mess. I'd bet the whole jug is gone. Unless they use sleeves from the factory, then they can probably re-sleeve it.

You are correct. It happened at the 12,000 mile service. It now has 15,500 on it. I shined a light down the spark plug hole and there is a shit load of metal chuncks in there. Oh well, maybe I can get a new engine out of this.

Britton
02-10-2008, 06:04 PM
who did the work?

Heberts in Baton Rouge. I am not pointing fingers at this point, but I do find it interesting that that the jug that failed is the same one they screwed up the valve adjustment on 3500 mile ago. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

Well......it ain't no Nissan that's for sure!!!!:wall:

HAHAHAHA....sorry Nick......had to do it!

I went over to Greg LeBlanc Toyota Friday night at 7:30 to check out what they had on the lot. I'd been thinking of upgrading my Tacoma to a V6 and possibly a crew cab. They didn't have anything I wanted in the 08's, but when a salesman walked up (I thought they were closed already) and said they had just gotten an extended cab in as a trade it peaked my curiosity. It's the exact same truck I had (even the same color), but a V6 and it has the TRD offroad package which includes the locking diff. It also has 6k less miles than mine and A LOT less scratches, dents, bumps, and bruises. I drove it off the lot, trucks traded, and papers signed by 9:10pm.

Dood....

Sorry to hear about your bike.

Is it an 05 or 06 GS.
If it's and 05, I wouldn't rule out when they were having all of those right side jugs being replaced either.

Ted, no offense. Glad to hear you got a new ride. As long as you are happy with what you got at the price, that is all that matters.

On another note, the Nissan is getting WAYYYYY better gas mileage than the Dodge was, so I am happy.

I wanted to update everyone on what is going on with the GS. Cory heard what had happend through the grapevine. He was very proactive, called me, and asked me to bring him the bike ASAP. I was not able to, so he came to my house and picked it up. He has torn down the motor and the following pictures speak for them self. He is pushing BMW for a new motor. All I have to say is that I am very impressed at how proactive Cory is being at trying to make this right.

02-14-2008, 09:11 PM
Wow! I haven't seen a valve do that since my Dad's old 427 side oiler, and those were sodium filled.

That's a weird failure. Not quite sure if a botched valve job would just cause the head to snap off. I expected to see the stem keepers off and the spring flopping around loose. Then again, he didn't show the top end of the head, so it's really hard to RCFA from the pictures. One other thing I'm wondering, is that an interference motor? If it jumps time like some cars today, is it possible for the piston to slap the valves?

Although, I just noticed the valve stuck into the top of the piston in the first picture. That is an unfortunately ugly mess.

Better now than El Paso, though, I think.

If you have your suspension on order and get it in time you can just add it on while you're at it (unless you wanted to do it yourself).

That's kinda scary that they don't have a spare crate motor for a bike only 3 years old. If it died due to a wreck then that means you're pretty much left with buying a new bike if the engine can't be rebuilt...

I was afraid the issue was going to be with BMW N/A. I can almost guarantee you they have crate engines, but they are all in Germany, and for warranty work, they would just rather pay for the parts and labor than to order and ship a motor across the pond.

We can only hope that if engine case damage is involved that they wouldn't be so tight about it.

Britton
02-18-2008, 10:35 PM
The way I look at it is if BMW N/A is willing to fix it, then cool. If it breaks again while under warranty, then BMW N/A can just fix it again.

I don't see any reason why they would replace the entire engine for the damage in the photos. Good to hear that they are taking care of it for you.

Britton
02-19-2008, 08:52 PM
BMW agrees with you! The "replace the engine" chant started when they discoved chunks of metal in the motor since the valve punched a hole in the piston. Can you say "extended warranty"?

mattc
02-19-2008, 09:58 PM
Ah, I can't see a hole in the pics. Well that just justifies more of a tear down, inspection, and then evaluating whether more parts are needed or just cleaning. Hope there weren't enough shards to clog the oil pick up or oil pump!

Those are some cool pics. I'd never thought about where the crank would have to be in a boxer. I also can't believe the size of the flywheel.

Oddly, and I guess because of my background, the first thing I thought when I saw that was. "How the hell do they transfer the power 90 degrees to get it to the chain?" Then I woke up and realized that there is a reason all those bikes run shafts.

Britton
02-20-2008, 11:06 PM
I stopped by Heberts today and Corey and Ben are doing a great job. This really is a big job and they have jumped on it like it was thier own bike. As Cooney says above, they ARE earning their money on this one. I asked them to put in a new clutch. The current clutch is in good shape for 15,500 miles, but since the motor is apart, I figured what the hell.

replacing belly skins on a v-tail bonanza that goofed and retracted the gear on takeoff... My bud is a sheet metal wizard... I drive the bucking bar, and step n fetchit.... There's a j3 in there that's in great shape, as well as a completely restored super cub, and another straight tail bonanza... next door, a stearman.... must be nice to be well off.... one day...

I picked up the GS for Heberts today and what an amazing job they did!!! I rode 208 miles today, it didn't burn a drop of oil and it is running a lot smoother than before!!! If Corey and Ben replicate this quality of work for everyone, I feel it is worth while giving them our business.

A big thanks goes out to Corey and Ben!!! You guys are tops in my book!!!

I also want to thank Bill and Chip for meeting me at Heberts. It was great seeing you guys! Chip took me out to some great dirt/gravel roads north of Denham Springs. What a great ride. Thanks again Chip! We also stopped by the Gonzales airport and met up with Philip. He gave as a great tour of some really cool planes. Thanks Philip!

Damn, I feel like I am at the Oscars...:D
