View Full Version : Historical Markers

I was thinking this year for a fund raiser, instead of the Fifty State race, maybe we can do historical markers. Not all of us are able to ride to many states, but with the amount of historical markers in this region this could amount to a pretty decent fund raiser as well as boosting all of our historical knowledge.

Thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea to me.......

I like that idea too. Not that I think I'll be winning any "visiting" awards compared to most others, but it's atleast a little more attainable for me.

I remember reading somewhere about a site with the locations of alot of the markers in Louisiana, but wasn't able to turn up any leads *shrug*

So are we going to do this? Maybe we could earn so money for that new server that we need? Just a thought?

I think we could draw more interest if its money raised for a good cause. Sick kids is #1 in my book.

+1 Brian!

I've got another way to make some money for the new server. I was thinking of a floating brothel. We can run by all the oil rigs in the gulf.

I saw that one... they don't tell you where exactly the marker is located, just what the marker says.

dmel419, that one's better. Thanks.
I know there are so many around this area that I'm sure I pass right by them and don't even know it.

And what are the rules again? Bike in the shot, and DSRL logo in there somewhere too?

So when are we going to get this off the ground?

Britton

I am ready to start immediately.

Suggested rules to help raise even more money:

$1.00 per marker and all you need is a picture of your mug with the marker. No shirt/bike needed in the picture.

What do y'all think?

another question. do separate tags of the same mark by different people count individually? like if 10 people on a group ride tag one marker at the same time, is that one or ten tags? if one, how do you determine who gets it? Post timestamp?

would have to be by when the pic was posted...

and DSRL shirt should be required... I mean it is an event for THIS site and all... not to mention the shirts help benefit this site....

and what about not eliminating a site once its been visited... but rather see who has visited the MOST in the end....

IE: group ride to X site... all members who take photographs at that site get credit for it... whoever has THE MOST sites tagged in the end wins

I understand the your reasoning for the shirt, but is this not to help raise money for the Children's Hopital? I am sure there are many times people come accross markers and do not have a shirt to put into the picture. By requiring the shirt, the amount of money raised would be reduced.

so, here's what I understand: a photo, showing the marker and some proof you were there, (bike, shirt, face, whatever...) posted individually by each member will count individually for each member who posts for that marker. Markers may be tagged by more than one individual, but markers may not be tagged more than once by a single individual. Most separate markers tagged by an individual wins.

That sound about right?

Thats the way I underrstand it.

What's going to be the kicker on this one is what some people refer to as a historical marker may not be the same as others. Grandpa's old still in the backwoods, while playing an important role in history, may not be what others have in mind as a "historical marker". Will these have to be recognized by some sort of government entity as such? Signs, buildings, monuments, and landscapes all included? I'm game for anything, but I think we all need to agree before hand.

that was going to be my next question. we need a list, like the geodetic benchmark survey, to work from so there's a level playing field. maybe a better comparison is the list of locations the iba gives out for the rally. i'll start looking around to see what lists are out there that aren't overly vague. maybe the national historic register or the like?

There are a couple of web sites with listings but my intention was an easter egg style hunt. It is amazing how many of these there are, and it is fun when you discover them.

+1

I'm continually amazed at where I find them. Some are very neglected.

Others say some pretty strange stuff...( second paragraph.)

Alrighty, so that is the kind of stuff we're looking for. Everyone's on their own to scrounge up what they may and someone will judge fitness.

Let the games begin!

Brian,

Can you make a "Race to the Historical Markers" stickey so we'll have a fresh thread to start posting pics to?

lol shouldn't we firm up the rules first? We need it official and posted before the race can begin for legal purposes I'm assuming...
