Hello boys and girls! I had posted on here somewhere about a set of 'home-made' fog lights that I saw this guy make for his KLR. He was concerned with current draw of his existing regular lights when using his heated grips/vest etc. so he researched into some l.e.d. lights. There were pretty much none available commercially so the guy looked into just bulbs and modified a set of Autozone lights to accept them. He also made a custom bracket from sheet alluminum that mounts them snug up against the front fender a' la Touratech on a GS. The original bulbs he used plus all the materials and the cheapy lights from Autozone put the cost right at about $50 for the set. The real benefit is that they only draw about 12-14 watts of juice so the price was a good trade off. But they weren't really all that bright. Then he found these other bulbs that are about twice as bright as your headlight and require almost NO modifications to the housings. But, they cost about $38 a BULB. Quite a bit more expensive but well worth it for my application. Bingo! The bottom line is that I made a set for my bike and they look FAB-u-lous. They're bright as hell too. The only real problem is that I am offshore right now and I don't have any pics to post. I finished the install late the night before I came out so I forgot to take pics. If I can figure out how to post the link to the thread (it's on KLR650.net) I will so you can look at the evolutions. P.S.: If anyone is interested, the brackets are really easy to make...especially since I now have the templates...and could be used for lots of other applications.
Now I can run my lights, my headlight, my heated grips AND a heated vest for my Alaska trip that is coming up in JUNE!!

Woo Hoooo!! Here's the thread for the light build. If you want to hit the highlights just look at the first few pages then the last ones. It ended up more of a contact point for the brackets than for the lights but you get the idea. They were really easy to make once I got all the materials.

If you are going to do it... go all out...

and just turn off your electric gear... the light and bike will warm you up just fine!

Holy SHIT!! I'd have to pull an auxiliary generator behind me just to run the thing! But you're right about keeping you warm. I'd be worried about getting reverse 'coon eyes' from BEHIND it!:Tazer1:
