This'll be the desired effect, just a little more black in it due to the POR-15 finish now on it. Maybe a Yammie XS650 front end as we have alot of those bikes kicking around.

Thanx for the offer of help! I have an ex-flat tracker friend who's doing this with me, but there's always room for more eyes and hands. I'll update this thread with progress and any questions that come up. I may end up scratching my head and need some advise from any XL/XR faithful out there.

Man, That is going to be awesome. I'm a huge fan of pretty much any bike that isn't around anymore. Good Luck.

Man, I just brought the whole collection of bike/parts/stuff to the house and went through it all. I have EVERYTHING I need to put the bike back on the road in stock config except tires. What a sweet deal this was!
I'm going to swap in a Yammie XS650 front end for the disc brakes and use the 650 rims front and rear as they are aluminum and look flat-tracky.
Yes, I said flat-tracky and expect royalties when the phrase takes off...
I'm pretty pumped!!!

Yeah, THIS GUY (http://www.dualsportridersoflouisiana.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1141) has it now and is going to restore it to former form from fractured.
Matt, meet Matt!

I think "restore" is an awfully strong word. I think that "make it legal enough to ride without becoming the favored whipping boy for the local law enforcement agency" is a little more appropriate.

I hold that title. Trust me.

Progress!! A bud gave me a headlight and housing from an old 80s Honda Shadow. Complete with brackets. Also getting a friend to machine a couple of polyurethane gas tank bushings.

I took a pic of the super industrial mega bulletproof non-slip headlight mount because that is the only noticeable change in the bike from the original pic.
Taking the handlebar to work tomorrow for a little modifying to accept mirrors.
I took the compression release handle and converted it into a clutch lever, so now I have a clutch. Also made the front brake work now. Adjusted the rear brake and started fabricating a choke cable.
Once I get the rolling stock, I'll be able to ride it. Then comes legalities.

Looking good, Matt!
Up to your old MacGuyver ways again!

MacGuyver was an amature. Granted, I can't blow up an armored truck with a chunk of bamboo filled with a couple CCs of unrefined methane (I spent 1.5 years in Explosive Ordnance Disposal and still can't figure how he did that.) but I can make a bitchin' headlight mount. :D
Found the exhaust, EJ. Many thanks.

Picked up a pair of grips, tubes, and rim strips today. Also did a little more work on the exhaust. I definitely got the all the peices together for the exhaust and even got them fitted. The only stock part of the exhaust is the header. The intermediate pipe was made from standard automotive exhaust pipe and the muffler came from a Yamaha sport bike (I think). With the rear fender and rack installed it doesn't look too bad. When I get the time to mock it up again I'll get a few more pics.

Here's a resized closeup of the headlight bracket.

I still have a ways to go, but I'll get it done.

I can't wait to ride it. :D
Got the seat today. Gonna make the exhaust bracket tomorrow. And now that I have the seat, I can start bolting things together and weld the intermediate tube and header together. I had to backup the tire purchase a few days but I should be able to get them this weekend. And then the wiring. :p
Here's the mounted seat:

Just don't try and give her mouth to mouth.
I'm looking at the huge can on it and trying to picture what you could possibly mean..... :)
Matt, I have the original DRZ black front fender somewhere in that shed where you found those exhausts. Wolvertone burnt the part that touched the header, but since it touched, it needed cut anyway.
BRAC prices apply, of course.
Looks like this:

It already has a Yamaha headlight and muffler, why not a Suzuki fender? :D
Thanks EJ.

A few test runs (read as 75 miles) proved the bike to be running good. Smokes when first cranked from sitting overnight. I'll replace the valve stem seals this winter. I should have the Insurance and license plate by the middle of next week. Hopefully I'll see you fellers soon.

2000 miles in 2 months, and still thumpin' along. Got a couple accessories since I started but still pretty unchanged.

I'll be looking to replace the front end sometime this winter so I can have disc brakes.
