When all this started, I asked my wife "What should the limit be?". She said that she donates $200 to charity every year (for the tax write-off). I said "Cool, because I honestly don't see me going over 100..."

So much for early predictions asdf

Well, with me in spittin' distance of my limit, I may have to sit out the remainder of the year.

Unless I can find a corporate sponsor qwer

That is the real problem with this "race". Ultimately it will come down to the person that can afford to contribute the most money. It kind of excludes those riders that cannot afford to drop $200 on the effort.

And the 50 State Race excluded all those who couldn't afford or didn't have time to ride the entire country.

Soooo....What is the perfect charity ride?

Now that's funny!!!

When I first started this fund raiser, I posted that the winner (and their spouse) get's a free dinner at Ruth's Chris Steak House with me. That is still in affect. See if she likes that...:cheeseburger:

Hey wait, the winner has to go with you?!

:D:D:D:D:D

And yea, I was talking to my brother about the contest, and his comment was "You do realize that you can eat at Ruth's Chris for much cheaper than $200 right?"

I don't want to get into a debate because I am not knocking the event. However, I didn't think the 50 State Race was primarily a charity event. It was a race to aquire all 50 states:

"In an effort to try and bring our site to each corner of this great nation,
we've set a goal that will encompass each of the fifty states of the union (yes, even Hawaii).
The race is to collect pictures taken around the continent at the welcome signs of each state, country, or territory and post them here."

While it did rely on being able to travel to many states to win, the entrance fee was whatever you felt you could afford to donate. That way at least everyone could afford the entry fee. The rest was up to your riding. Any riding contest will always come down to the riding.

My suggestion for this ride would have been to follow the same rules. Give what you can afford to give and collect whatever markers you can. If someone can afford to pay $200 for 200 markers, they can afford to just donate $200 and collect markers at will. The same would go for someone who could only afford $20.

Just my opinion.

+1 agreed

My mistake on the 50 State Race. I had joined the site well after it's inception and thought it was charity event when it raised money for Children's Hospital of New Orleans. No biggie.

You state "My suggestion for this ride would have been to follow the same rules. Give what you can afford to give and collect whatever markers you can. If someone can afford to pay $200 for 200 markers, they can afford to just donate $200 and collect markers at will. The same would go for someone who could only afford $20. " If you feel strongly about this, why did you not make this suggestion when I was setting this up versus waiting until June? I am not trying to piss you off, but it is frustrating when someone is critical and makes suggestions after the fact.

When I put the historcal marker event into place, I clearly stated that it was to raise money for Children's Hospital of New Orleans. The rules are clear and if someone doesn't agree with them, they do not have to participate and they are more than welcome to create their own charity, race or whatever suits them. This was never about the individual, but about trying to give to a very good cause collectively.

I've come to the conclusion that I'll keep hunting markers. If I find a "sponsor", great. If not then I'll concede at my $200/200 marker limit.
I'm having a blast either way.
I know more about Louisiana (and some outside of LA) history now than I ever did in High School.

What's even funnier is when I mention it to someone and the conversation goes like...
Them: "Ya know, there's a marker over by so-and-so's..."
Me: "Got it!"
Them: "Well there's one over by..."
Me: "Got it!"
Them: "What about the one..."
Me: "Got that one too!"

My older brother actually challenged me by saying "I bet you don't have the Harvey Castle marker". I replied with "I sure do. And the Harvey Canal marker".
He said "There's a marker for the canal?" :D:D:D:D:D

I really enjoyed the "50 State Race" but like someone already said it could only truly be chased by participants that had the time and the means....I have been kicking around an idea for a contest for 2009. More of a photo scavenger hunt. We could pick say 500 photo opps in Louisiana and the surrounding areas. We could come up with some form of scoring system that would be determined by how difficult the photo is to obtain. Anyone who would like to help in the planing give me a shout and we can bounce some ideas off the walls.

Sounds like a great idea Juice!

I'm glad you're having a good time Redbird!!! I'm from Las Vegas, so this has helped me learn a lot more about Louisiana and her colorful history.

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe something with a ralley type scoring system where one gets points for both miles and photos, so the riders have to develop their own strategy for collecting points.
