The Right Way to See the West!
From the time the early American settlers landed on these shores, they
strived to go west, in search of open areas to raise cattle, farm, or find
riches hidden deep within the hills. Today, the exodus continues, but for a
different reason: The wide open spaces of the south-western desert is a
haven for off-road riders in search of endless miles of dirt trails and
desert sands. For most city-dwellers accustomed to "the good life," the
prospect of shipping their beloved bike thousand miles from home to the
middle of some western desert is enough to put an end to the fantasy. But
fret not.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsa52g.jpg
There is a man who lives in the heart of the West that will help you
Organize such a trip. No kidding! All you have to do is tell him what type
of ride you'd like to do and for how long and he'll plan the route, arrange
for accommodations, and if he thinks you're on the level he may even share
with you one of his secret fishing holes. If you're worried about how to get
your ride from your garage to the barren south-west, don't be. He's already
got one set up for you -- a Suzuki DR350 equipped with a few aftermarket
goodies to make your ride more enjoyable.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rtnb5g.jpg
This summer we got the opportunity to tag along with Nevada's foremost
off-road guide as he scouted some of the thousands of acres that make up his
back yard. Come spend a few days with us as we explore some of the best
off-road riding the West has to offer!
By Len Nelson, Off-Road Editor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt Ernst is a mid-Atlantic native; he moved to Nevada in the early 1970s
where he worked in a zinc mine and began riding on weekends. Before long,
the lure and charm of the Nevada outback consumed his time and thoughts -
casual rides turned into week-long excursions.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rtnbet.jpg
Matt recognized the need for
a tour guide in this rough country, so with his local knowledge, he created
Nevada Motorcycle Adventures. Along with playing businessman, Matt doubles
as driver, tour guide, Emergency Medical Technician, socialite, mechanic,
historian, cook and environmentalist among other things. He's also a heck of
a nice guy.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsa5ba.jpg
Matt turned 40 years old just the day before we set out to ride. While his
maturity is evident in the way he runs his business, don't be fooled -- he
knows how to have a good time and will do his very best ensure that you do
too. Matt's business is headquartered in his home. Upon entering, it becomes
immediately apparent that he's serious about what he does. Oversize maps
blanket every wall; lines drawn in colored ink trace routes from his past
trips. Points of interest are marked by push-pins with brightly colored
heads. A 200,000 mile award from BMW hangs from a nail in the wall; he
hasn't had the time to send out the paperwork for his 300,000 mile award
yet. Riding gear, medical kits, radios and tool pouches are neatly stacked
on shelves in readiness for hasty departures.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsa5hx.jpg
Nevada's wide open plains offer a sense of freedom you'll never find in any city or town.
If you're agoraphobic, bring your medicine or better yet stay home. For the
rest of us the catharsis starts here; all thoughts of home and unfinished
business lose their importance. You can put your watch away - you've got no
place to be and plenty of time to get there. You understand why you came
here once you start paying attention to the beauty that surrounds you.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsbgir.jpg
Before long, we're standing at the base of a mountain range ready to ride. A
two-track trail sneaks off into the hills. Snowcapped peaks paint the
background and an ornate palette of trickling water, sagebrush, unusual rock
formations, and a scattering of logs dried by the sun are in plain view. A
childlike enthusiasm takes hold and we can't wait to get going.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsbh1x.jpg
If you're thinking a Suzuki's DR350 is just a little too wimpy for an
outback adventure like this, think again. Amenities such as an electric
start are worth their weight in beef jerky; no one wants to spend their
afternoon trying to make peace with a flooded 4-stroke that won't start -
especially when you're armed with only a kick starter and a manual
compression release. The bikes are bone stock except for Acerbis
extra-capacity gas tanks, and after-market aluminum chain guards. Matt also
installed Acerbis Rally hand guards on all his machines; previous complaints
stemming from the DR's stock brush guards should be no more. The new
hardware should have no trouble protecting hands from the rugged plant life
you're bound to encounter. Once you pilot the Suzuki thumper through the
thick and thin of Nevada, even for just a few hours, you can't help but
acknowledge that it's perfectly suited for this application. A twist of the
throttle brings the smooth motor to a rumbling growl. Power delivery is
smooth and predictable. Sitting on the bike is like settling into the
cockpit of a tank. You feel confident rolling across the high desert floor,
as if no harm can come to you.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsbhao.jpg
A particularly brutal winter has managed to cause accessibility problems
with many trails this year. Warm days often result in raging streams and
flooding as the snow from nearby mountain peaks melts away. Although it's
the middle of June a few trails are still covered with impassable snow
drifts! Our first day is a light one as far as riding is concerned. We spend
time getting accustomed to the terrain and the bikes; no one wants to start
their week off with an injury. Besides, the views are so spectacular you'll
need time to stop and breathe it all in. Riding out here can be dangerous,
not because of the difficulty of the trails, but because you have to fight
the urge to gape at the breath-taking scenery.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsbjo4.jpg
Today we make several stream crossings, scale rock-covered hillsides, and
sputter through small forests of Cottonwood. The rich dark soil, roots and
tree shade act as a reminder of what it's like to ride back in the
Northeast - not at all what we expected.
After riding for a while we make a side-trip to a rustic mining town for
some refreshments. Settled in 1862, the town was once home to a thriving
mining industry with 11 mills operating simultaneously. While mining isn't
dead, business has slowed down. Some of the town's old buildings have begun
to show signs of decay, adding to the charm of this rustic gem. Some say the
town we were in is on its way to becoming a ghost town, but a steady flow of
visitors is keeping the town alive. We wouldn't miss stopping in at the
town's only café if we came back. The food is good and the conversation is
even better.
While fine accommodations can be had in many towns, we opted for some fresh
air our first night. We made camp next to one of the many secluded
hot-springs that are scattered throughout the area. Hot water, rich in
sulfur, rises from the depths of the earth. Steam caused by the cool night
air is playfully whisked away by gentle breezes. A makeshift pool has been
constructed by someone who took the time to dig a large hole in the ground.
The temperature of the pool can be regulated by placing or removing sandbags
from a trough leading from the bubbling source. At another spring down the
road, we spend a few moments talking to a former truck operator who claims
to have a bad back; he swears that a soak in the tub helps him more than any
medicine his doctors have prescribed.
As one of the most picturesque sunsets you could imagine disappears over one
horizon, a full moon beams brightly from the other. We start a fire with
some dead sagebrush collected from alongside the road. When burned, dried
sage releases such a fine smoke that you can almost breath it without
discomfort. Food cooked over the flames takes on the flavor, making even
re-fried beans taste extraordinary. The temperature quickly drops making the
comfort of a sleeping bag seem more like a bed at a four-star hotel. Bats
flutter about in the moonlit sky hurling themselves at insects. The
dwindling fire pops and crackles a few last breathes.
The next morning, Matt cooks up some breakfast and coffee before our ride.
Today we do some hiking and explore a cave containing Petroglyphs --
drawings that date back to 1000 B.C. carved in stone by Native Americans.
Traveling further away from civilization we stop to take pictures of an
abandoned ranch.
After a busy morning, I was content to just casually roll across the
landscape that afternoon. We spend another evening camping out next to a
different, yet equally magnificent, hot spring. As I soak for a few hours,
exhausted from a long day, I can almost hear the sounds of horse's hooves
cantering across the land, Indians howling, dogs barking, cattle ranchers.
Several days of listening to Matt's historical narratives left colorful
images of what it must have been like to live back then.
The next couple of days are spent riding the varied terrain, rising then
falling, the temperature changing with the hour and altitude. A nice thing
about the Suzuki dual-sport is their fairly quiet exhaust note; several
times we were able to sneak up on wild horses grazing.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsbhoi.jpg
We pass several abandoned gold and silver mines, this one had ore-cars still
intact. Almost 100 feet from the ground, Matt carefully wheels his bike out
onto a creaky old ore-loading station. I stood a safe distance on solid
ground. The gold fever of the past is still alive and kicking in Nevada. We
come across an active mine where gold is being extracted by spraying cyanide
and water on finely ground ore. Not exactly the most environmentally
friendly process?
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsa629.jpg
Getting lost is easy out here. Once you get into the mountains there are
virtually no signs, people or places to fuel up - you're on your own. Jeep
trails criss-cross one another - some leading to dead ends while others
develop into wide sand washes where you can really get moving. Cactus and
wildflowers of red, white and pink grow haphazardly along the trail. At the
higher elevations we ride paths that have cliffs only a few feet from the
edge. Pine trees and gigantic pine cones are prolific up here.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rsa6bo.jpg
The lowlands consist of long two-track roads with occasional whoop-dee-do
sections that meander through and around cattle ranches. The dust isn't so
bad but it's nice to be at the front of the pack when cruising down these
trails. Most ranchers are cool about letting people cross their property
providing the privilege isn't abused. Don't litter, scare the cattle, or
leave the gates open. Matt makes every effort to get to know these friendly
folks. Besides being good PR, you never know if the owner of the property
you're on may have had a bad experience with bikers in the past; there's no
sense in getting shot at by a fed-up rancher with a "talking iron."
Hidden in the brush we see skeletons of livestock. An occasional rattlesnake
disappears into the protective tangles of a sagebrush plant. At one time an
angry Brahman begins to grunt at us; he roughs up the ground with his hoof
and others join him. We high-tail it out of the area not wanting to learn
their plans for us. As we were running, we come upon a large crater, home to
a bubbling pool of hot water. Fortunately, the Suzuki's have good brakes!
http://i1.tinypic.com/rtn9d5.jpg
If you've been interested in doing a trip like this, but want to attempt it
on your own, think carefully for one moment. Is it really worth it? As we
see it, Matt is the only sensible alternative to exploring Nevada's country.
Not only will he take you directly to cool points of interest and the best
places to go riding, but he has respect for the land, people and culture.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rtn95w.jpg
Matt has a stake in this area of the country. In a way, he's one of the many
caretakers of the land, he wants to preserve it, show people how beautiful
it is and how it should be respected. Matt's DR's proved reliable, torquey,
comfortable, fun, and easy to ride. And they're quiet. They're adequately
powerful, yet the rear tire won't shred everything that crosses its path,
and they don't spew clouds of blue exhaust or burn excessive amounts of
fuel. The DR is environmentally friendly in every way - just the kind of
bike riders need to keep public lands open.
http://i1.tinypic.com/rtn8n8.jpg
Before leaving for home we spent our final day participating in the
Denxgrosnez Festival (pronounced Doo-gra-nay) which features food, drinks,
music, belly dancing, several antique bikes and climaxes with a bicycle race
around the city. There are ghost towns to see, the Ichthyosaur State Park
(which contains over 1000 acres of fossilized reptile remains, some up to 50
feet long), parts of the former pony express trail, fishing (a local sport
shop told us trout were being snatched up with nymphs and worms), and a few
cat houses here and there (prostitution is legal in certain parts of the
state). All in all, there is just way too much stuff to see in one week.
Looks like we'll have to come back again next year!
Well what would a DSRL trip to LV be w/o the HBIC???
WHOO HOO!!! U know I'm there!!!

I just want to say for the record, right here, right now, in front of God & everyone, 2 weeks before airline money is due...........................
Please don't get ur hopes up that I will be any less wild in Vegas than I am anywhere we've gone out in Louisiana!!
I haven't had a vacation in 3 yrs, will be 3 1/2 yrs by then & I refuse to spend it sitting around like a bump on a log!! I get one night off from kids & all other responsibilities about once every 3 mos!!
This vacation alone will be equal to more time off then I get in a given yr!
Vacation is about cutting up, being carefree, laughing, creating life long memories & making the most it!! Otherwise what's the point??
I can not wait & I couldn't be going w/ a better group of ppl!!
OH JUICE...................................
Tell ur people's airfare due 1 week from today!!!!!!!!!!
2 days, 19 weeks till we fly out!!!
Yes, I know I sound like the one w/ all the kids who hasn't gotten away in awhile, well that's because, that's EXACTLY who I am!!
Oh & for all of u who aren't goin, when we get back home (Dam we have to come back) and post pics, I so don't want to hear, oh looks like y'all had a great time, wish I would have made it, maybe next yr, blah!!

I've been needing a good excuse to go explore the desert out west. Seems to me like a great time to do it right? The guided dual-sport rides sound like it would be worth the trip just for that!! I'll have a definative yes or no when I get back from Mexico, but let me know if there is anything I need to book (hotel room, tour, show, etc) before May 31st.
It's all going to depend on how much prep. I need for Horizons Unlimited in October back down in Mexico. I'll only have 5 days at home between these two trips......Cool12

I am going to take care of the hotel and show reservations in late June. We don't need a definite answer till then. It would be awesome if you can make it.

F' it.....I'm in. I'll be making it as a ride though, going over there 8 days before you guys and make a few pit stops along the way.......Grand Canyon, Death Valley (the real one), and some of the little "must sees" between each. What's yet to be decided is if I'm going to do it on the bike, or take the Tacoma and do some 4 wheelin.
Hey Kevin......you wanted to know when my next trip will be, well, sign up and we'll certainly take the bikes!!

It's 289miles from Vegas to Venice, so you can figure a 5 hour ride one way at least. If we were to go there for a night, then it might not be that bad, but to do a round trip in one day, twice through the middle of LA, you're talking about a FULL day. Leave at 5am....get there just before lunch......leave around 2pm and be back to the hotel around 7 or 8. It's do-able, if we don't get caught for any period of time in traffic.
It would be cool to consider this a coast to coast ride for me though. Gulf coast to the west coast..............and back.Cool12

Ted that is going to be my delimma now for the C2C ride. I'm allotted 10 days. Juice and I discussed Hauling the bikes to point A (we each take turns driving non stop) then from there, west coast and up and around and down. If you wanna kinda plan like mine, you and I can break off somewhere around Arkansas/Tenn and head home..
As far as teh LA thing, we gotta remember that the girls are going to be with us and right now, Jules was pretty maxed out at 325-350 miles on the beemer..
I still think DS through the mountains would be cool..

The Strat is a cool place. I think it is the tallest tower in the United States. The Location is its only drawback. It is at the north end of the strip and it sits almost alone. There is no good strip access from the hotel. Meaning everywhere we go we will take a cab. That is why it is $500 less then the others. The Mandalay bay & the Luxor are on the other end of the strip near the airport. But there are trams and trains that connect everything on that end of the strip. The Paris is in dead center of the strip. My number one choice. But man I could use that extra $500 in the poker rooms. What do you guys think? Ted speak up? I really don't care one way or the other.

Murphy's Law has potentially screwed my schedule. We're going to be getting a new company man (hurry Murry) is coming to the rig next month and bringing his faithful mud engineer along with him. When the dust settles I'm not sure if I'm going to be on the same hitch that I am now. I'm more than willing to put money down on a room as long as it's refundable within a few weeks before we go.
That said, I'm good with whichever hotel ya'll want to go with. If I were by myself I'd probably go with one of the cheaper choices and just take a cab, but I'm not one to cut costs if it's worth it in convienience and fun.

And cold as hell when you get back on the bike after being stopped for a while! I love riding in dry climates compared to Sowt Lewseeana.
Dito on the Camelbak or Platypus hydration systems, but I'd also recomend some kind of textile jacket with good ventilation, but NOT a full-mesh type. We'll be riding during the dry heat of the day which isn't too bad if you can keep the air off of your skin.
It looks like Kev and I will be able to carry some bike gear up there with us in the back of the truck (helmets and riding gear) for anyone who's looking to wear their own stuff instead of renting it. Most apparel will be put in garbage bags and strapped down hard, and helmets should be wrapped in bubble wrap (or use an old helmet that you don't mind if it gets nicked) and then tied in a garbage bag to help keep any rain off. I'm thinking of having a "tech day" down here at my house on the 10th or 11th of Sept. for anyone who wants to learn how to change tires, oil changes on a GS, or just general wrenching on your bike. I can get any gear from anyone going to Vegas then, or I should be around N.O. and B.R. in the few days preceeding that.

Already done...
Been working on the list in-between doing homework...
Well, well, y'all are never gonna believe this!!
Thursday a really good friend of my boyfriend's calls him up, says that he & some of the guys are driving into LV from Cali next Friday!
So my boyfriend tells me about it, I tell him, "Baby you should go, I want you to go, you will have so much fun with them there." So Friday morning I get on the computer to show him how to book his flight.
Now keep in mind this was the weekend I was suppose to be going w/ y'all!
But I had some reasons a few mos ago for not going, mostly I just don't like to spend money on myself like that & at the time I had been helping other family members w/ unpredicted expenses.
So anyway, later on Fri my boyfriend says, "you should have booked you a ticket too, your friends will be there that weekend right?"
I was like, "they'll be there, but nah, I don't want your guy friends feeling like I'm invading the guy time, that's not fair to y'all."
So after we talked about it some & I made him promise me that he would spend some time w/ the guys w/o me, I booked my plane ticket & yes he even paid for it (we're still bumping heads over him not taking my money for my ticket).
So I'll be in LV some time after 6 PM, Friday!!
Sorry to break the news to you, but you'll see me there!! Darn just when y'all thought y'all were gonna get a break, huh??!!
Juice & Nicole, I'll be in touch w/ ya'll this week before y'all leave!!
Remember 2 things, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas and we have so got to get one of those famous shocka pics taken while we're there!!

Well, I guess this would be the only place to put a trip report since it's not yet a ride, and we've got so many of us involved in this one. I left this morning around 5am and pulled into Amarillo at 7:30pm. I forgot how long of a drive it is up here from Houma as it goes by faster on a bike.
The drive was pretty uneventful until I pulled over to take a piss on the side of a country road, got 50' down it, and realized that what I thought was dark gravel was actually soft mud. I rode down about 50 yards, drained the main vein, and decided to try and get out backwards since the road seemed too narrow to do a three point. Everything was going SLICK until the truck decided to slide sideways off the side into even softer mud. Now, it is a 4x4, but it still has the stock tires on it and I wasn't quite prepared to do this kind of mud riding just yet. We're not talking wet stuff.......this was the sticky, cakey kind of red clay. With a bit of rocking, a lot of sliding, and almost bottoming out, the tires finally found something hard underneath it all and I was able to get back to the highway. The truck is now red, with just a bit of black showing through! Pictures coming soon......for now I need some sleep.

$438 is not to to bad considering gas prices. It will be over $500 after T.T.L. I paid $498 each for airfare 3 months ago. We got 3 nights at the Stratosphere and bike rentals from BMW of Las Vegas.

I bet that a certain part of you was puckering when you started getting stuck! I pulled off the road on the beamer a couple of months ago to do the same thing and the darn thing ended up falling over and slightly down a hill. Over $1,000 in damage! I had a hard time getting it turned back over and I remember that pucker factor quite well................
Glad you got out! Have a much safer and drier rest of the trip!

I'm here in Kingman, Arizona for the night, just south of Vegas. I'm beat after doing 75 miles offroad to get the sunset on the north rim of the grand canyon last night, sleeping in the truck, getting sunrise on the southwest rim, getting lost in a pumice refuge, seeing the meteor crater, and driving west again. Really, I'm looking forward to "slowing down" in Vegas!! Nick, forgive me if your bags are just a bit dusty, but when you see where they've gone, you'll understand why!

Attached are a few pictures from "The Nevada Experience". I am not even going to attempt a ride report. Some things are better left to the professionals. I am sure that Ted will have quite a few written stories to tell. Ted left Las Vegas with his GS loaded in the back of his Tacoma about 6 hours prior to our scheduled departure on American Airlines. After spending two days in Nevada and Texas airports, a rental car and a motel in Shreveport the wife and I finally made it home. Only a few hours ahead of Ted..
"peeonu" American Airlines
The view from the Stratosphere tower observatory 1,100 feet above the Last Vegas Strip. I have been up the tower probably 7-8 times over the past 10 years. Every trip to the top is a new experience. This view was worth the trip alone. We did not get to ride any of the rides due to the high winds. the winds were blowing at about 40 knots out of the west. I got a funny video of Ted showing the power of the winds and scaring some senior citizens. Keep your eyes open the video is to be hosted at a later date.
http://www.dualsportridersoflouisiana.com/photopost/data/500/IMG_0835.jpg
Here is a shot of Nicole & Jules on top of the tower. Notice the Starbucks? She was on a BMW for two days and look what it did to her.

In the parking lot of BMW of Las Vegas. The Mighty BMW RT. I was very impressed with this bike. I haven't a single complaint. It had lots of power for such a big bike. There was lots of storage space and a 8 gallon fuel tank for some long distance travel. In The words of the wife "it's was like a sofa on wheels".
http://www.dualsportridersoflouisiana.com/photopost/data/500/IMGP0114.JPG
These pictures that I am about to share will never incorporate the beauty that this place holds. The desert has always been a place that held my attention hostage. I think I could spend a lifetime riding the desert and the four corners area.

We stopped for a photo opportunity and this guys pulls up riding a silver Bandit 1200. He was quite the character. Lee was his name. Turns out that Lee was born and raised in chalmette but has been living in southern Nevada for the past 30 years. He was very animated and had us all laughing till our guts hurt. He gave us a quick history lesson of the area and the early native American culture. We also learned that the road that leads up to Red Rock Canyon (the road that we were traveling) was known to the locals as "The Widow Maker"
I think the Dark Side of the Moon patch on his worn leather jacket said it all.

Well, like Brian said, I finally made it home. I left Vegas at 7am Pacific time and arrived home 34 hours later at 7pm CST. That gave me 29 hours driving time and a 5 hour nap that I took in the truck while parked in a truckstop parking lot. The trip was FANTASTIC and I have to thank Juice, Nicole, Nick, and Jules for showing me how much fun it is to take a vacation with great friends again. I'll go ahead and put up a drive/trip/ride report in a day or so when I get some free time offshore.

For some crazy reason the first thing that came to mind after passing this saloon was craig......qwer lee told us that you can still see the bullet holes in the walls from the early rowdy settlers of the west. If these walls could talk what story's I bet they would tell.

Here is a shot of Ted out front searhing for the road to the promised land. We would eventually find the enchanted land only to turn around after the road twisted up a mountain and the blacktop quickly turned to gravel. I could have swore that I saw a tear in Ted's eye as we turned around. And if his GS could talk I bet it was like WTF? What are you doing? This is what we came here for? What in the hell are we turning around for?
