Here's the wiring digram for the DS7. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me, if I jump the ignition switch red wire to the brown wire, that "should" get me juice to the coils... right?
And jumping the red to the blue would get me lights?

That's how it reads to me.

I'll have to think about this oneStupid12

Yes, but that will power everything, looks like. If there's a short in any other system areas, you'll have trouble.
Looks like you have a 3 phase generator and the voltage regulator controls the field. You may be able to upgrade the whole system to a newer charging system and CDI of some sort.

The first time I opened this thread, only a small amount of the drawing was displayed, I thought there was some problem with the way it was uploaded or something and I was being a smartass.

More like a dumbass.

Duh...

Let me study in a minute.....

Yep.

Red to Brown, should give you voltage at the two brown wires at the coils.

derf, yea there's a $125 upgrade to a modern regulator/rectifier. I want to test the stuff that's there now to see if it works. If not, this upgrade is definitely in my future.
Or for roughly $500 I can convert it completely over to CDI... that shit just ain't in the budget! (and besides, where's the adventure in that?!:D)
Walt and Evil, thanks for the confirmation. I'm going to try jumping the switch and see what powers up :)

Dood, pick up a little 12v test light from AZ or something. It makes it real easy to poke around and see what's hot!

I want to play with it some more!!

I have a test light. Two of them actually, but one is playing hide and seek

Well, jumping the brown and blue wires gave me power at the coil and lights! Headlight works too! On/off switch and high/low beam. Taillight powers up, but no brake lights from either switch... need to do some more tracing :)
I need to get it warmed up enough to idle again to test the alternator for proper output. I may have to hook it up to the Stepside for that since the old battery I had lying around doesn't seem to want to hold much of a charge. I kinda expected as much, it's been sitting for almost a year.

Check the "Update" thread for new pics ;)
