I traded my XR400 for this:

It has new tires and is in a little better shape than the XR4.
Hopefully my teenage son can handle it. He is too big for the XR100 we have now. I think the XR4 would be too much for him to handle. The 250 isn't really much smaller but should be easier to start and have enough power to be fun.

Gotta love the white and purple.
Dang. You have a 400 and a 250?
I like the white. The purple I could do without.

No, that's my 400. It looks like we might even have the same tires. I've robbed the pro tapers and put them on my DR, it looks so pitiful leaning against a post with no bars.
Oh, I knew you had a 400. Now that I look closer I can see a difference.
When I made the trade deal online I was expecting the 250 to be smaller.
Maybe I won't break the kickstarter spindle on this one.

Yea they are physically the same size, just smaller engine. I don't know what parts interchange though. When I was 11 I bought an 86 XR250 with dual carbs, now that thing was a turd! I was so happy to start riding that 400 when my dad got it.
I think your son will be more comfortable with the 250's power than he would be on the 400. The 400 can make things hairy in a hurry.

looks good, now get that sucker plated!
That's another up side of the trade. I have a title for the 250, not in my name, but I have one.
How strict are they on the DOT tires? I may need some used take offs or something to get past inspection, when the time comes.

I'll save you a set of worn take offs. Does it have a 17" or 18" rear?

i had bald ass tires on the CR250 the other day when we had it inspected at LSP headquarters. i think he was in a hurry though to do something else. as long as they aren't slicks, it'll probobly be alright
I think 21" front and 18" rear, just like XR400 and XR650L, right?
