I want to strip the paint off of the chrome fenders... does anyone have a good method of removal?? I'm thinking maybe "Aircraft Remover" stuff that comes in aerosol cans?

matt, need to use the sandblaster?
Redbird

If all they did was paint over the chrome? Use "clearcoat peeler", it'll lift the paint right off the chrome and isn't as "harsh" as the stripper.
Matt, I have a low-rise black handlebar and a NOS set of cables/front brake line. I aquired them way back when I had my CB900F. The bars/cables are for a CB1100F.
You're welcome to them if you want them.
mattc

Lee- I'll let you know if I do need to use it.
Redbird- I'll look into that, where can I find it?
I'd love to have the parts, I'll throw a couple bucks your way, or to the site if you prefer.
Redbird

Autozone carries the peeler. I've used it to remove paint from chrome valve covers before with great results. And I used it to clean the green paint (and most of the underlying original black paint) from the spare 250 engine for my project bike. (posted here) (http://www.dualsportridersoflouisiana.com/forums/showpost.php?p=69658&postcount=20)
As for the parts... I don't need anything for them, they're just collecting dust over here. But if you'd like to make a donation to the site, I'm sure Juice would appreciate it:D

Have I missed the background on this? Where did you get it? Have you started it?
mattc
04-06-2009, 11:48 PM
Since Bill requested, I'll provide you with some background info.
The PO, dubbed "Grit", is a friend of my dad's from the local bar. I worked with him cutting grass in the summers from age 11 to 16, and I always admired all of his old school bikes. He used to work on and help create custom bikes, mostly H-D's. If anyone knows Cayote's Motorcycle Specialties on Cloverland, well this guy worked with him when the shop was out of Cayote's house in North BR.
Anyway, we always talked bikes while riding from job to job, and one day, Grit asked if I wanted to ride his CB750. I said "Heck yes!" (as I didn't say the F word as much when I was 13) So I took the ol' girl up and down the block a few times screaming to redline in the first two gears! Scared the bejesus out of me!! I was so excited, it was a lot faster than my dad's (MY) XR400!
Needless to say, I was in love with this raspy sounding old bike. My dad would always tell me stories of his times on street bikes, before I was born, the best stories involved a '72 CB750 and a later model CB550. I always wanted this bike, and my dad thought about buying it a couple of times. After selling my miata, the time was right. My life is now complete (haha!) because I have this bike! It's been fun tinkering with it, but man, I just want to go ride it!
Hopefully I'll throw the tank on and gas it up tomorrow. Maybe it will pop off, if not some carb work is in order. It'll be all downhill from there.

Thanks guys. Here's today's progress report:
So, I filled the tank with gas, and the petcock leaks. Yay. Carbs are getting gas, but the engine is not, and the battery is VERY weak. :baby:
Parts needed so far:
Petcock
Battery
I decide to tear into the bike for real. Off comes the rear fender (gotta strip the paint still), under fender piece, battery and battery box, slide the airbox back, and now to the carbs. UGH! They were STUCK! But after enough twisting, prying, lubing, and pulling, I won! :1stplace:
Here's the bike all nekkid!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/mattc522/P4070354.jpg
I pull the airbox out and find this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/mattc522/P4070363.jpg
Huh? wtf I fish out the broken pieces, and find glue residue on them. Hmmm looks like I'll have to do a better patch job than the last guy, as this is a beater bike, and will not have a $180 airbox replaced!
On to the carbs!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/mattc522/P4070364.jpg

Well at least I know what I'm dealing with. Everything looks decent, with the exception of rubber parts. I ordered the rebuild kits. Thankfully, the accelerator pump works and squirts fuel, so that saved $30.
So far I'm up to $750 total for the bike. After it runs, I'll order some tires and fork seals, and hopefully that will be all it needs money wise.
I hope you guys are enjoying this thread. Here's a 79 f model on CL for an absurd amount of money http://batonrouge.craigslist.org/mcy/1104079125.html
You will either ride or truck that to the tech day, right?
mattc
04-07-2009, 08:25 PM
Hopefully I'll be riding it, and there will be no work needing to be done to it by that point. (Yeah, right!) :rotfl:
I plan to have it running and riding at the end of next week, at which point I'll order tires and fork seals.
I'd rather help people wrench on their junk than drag up my junk to work on.

Would you believe I still had the stock airbox from my 900F up until I moved into this house? Now that was about 10 years ago, but I sold the bike probably over 20 years ago.
I just knew that as soon as I got rid of it somebody would need it! :P
I went with four cone style filters on the 900. I think they look cooler than the stock box anyway;)

Alright, spent another day at mom's messing with it, and doing various projects for her.
Accomplished:
-split and re-assembled carbs with new rubber, cleaned some more
-"fixed" broken air box via soldering iron
-stripped paint off of rear fender
-installed new petcock in tank, no leaks, works correctly
-re-installed front fender
-(edit) installed SV650 front brake master cylinder, until I rebuild original
-installed new plastic roofing for awning over back door (shelter for the mutt)
-chopped down some unwanted branches
-tune up on mom's bicycle
all in all a pretty productive day

Tinkered a bit this morning. Got the tail light/ brake light working correctly, and custom-restricted the pipes with pennies and some JB. I wonder if they will stay? The reason for this is that the jetting is stock with aftermarket pipes with a bunch of holes drilled in the back, and the motor would fall flat at about 7k RPM.
Here are some pics, all put together.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comment. I think what derf said hits the nail on the head "Has a classic look and looks practical" I just plan to ride it- a whole lot.
Issues after a day of riding it around:
-Still have a very very small leak from the gas tank. Will have to sand down, re-JB it and try again.
-Above 7k RPMs it dies out, I think it's wayyyy too lean. The pipes provide no real restriction, I think I'm going to 'modify' the old jets. This thing is LOUD (I really wish I had some stock or restrictive mufflers!)
-Has a few electrical gremlins, a lot of the wiring has been cut, replaced, and butt spliced back together. I have a feeling that this will be a find, fix, and repeat process. Good news is that the main wiring harness is in tact.

Had a pretty good reality check this morning- Was rolling up to a red light and the bike died. Ok, it's still cold, push the button.... nothing. Pushed it up on the sidewalk and it acts like the key is off. I eventually jiggle enough wires to make it come back to life. Briskly rode back to Mom's carport, and I'll be tearing it all down Thursday to inspect all electricals and fix as necessary.

Installed:
Battery
Fuel petcock
4 carb rebuild kits
Front brake m/c rebuild kit (using SV650 m/c for now)
On order:
Tires and tubes
Ignition switch base
Fork oil seals
Spark plugs
Air filter
Oil filter
I think I'm going to need coils, as the bike cuts out after about 7k RPM, and it's kind of a known issue with these old bikes that the coils go bad when they get this old.

Yea- those damn old things are money pits, huh?
I got a tip today from a customer to bring my tank to a radiator shop- they'll clean it with acid to remove all of the rust and coat it with something. He said it worked great for him. I'm about ready to give up on JB weld.
mattc
04-30-2009, 10:07 AM
Ok, still no real progress on the tank. The radiator shop wouldn't touch it due to the coating on the inside, plus he said it's just too bad to fix.
I ordered a tank from a K model bike from ebay a few minutes ago. $35. We'll hope it fits, it looks pretty decent.

Installed the new tires and air filter just a few minutes ago.
Also, I figured out the problem was the main fuse- it had been replaced by a round style fuse with a plastic holder. The plastic had melted and caused a poor connection. Replaced it with a $3 part from Danger Zone.
See you fine folks tonight at Acme.

I think I'm going to need coils, as the bike cuts out after about 7k RPM, and it's kind of a known issue with these old bikes that the coils go bad when they get this old.
I had ignition problems with mine too but the guy fixing it (b/c I don't know shit about these things) said the coils were good but one of the CDI boxes was bad and had to be replaced, a $125 part, glad I only needed one. That, and a good cleaning of the carbs, and it runs like a champ now....or so he says, I haven't picked it up yet.
I love mine and the fact that so much of it is still original but I'm really diggin' the look you got going on, looks more "usable" than mine if ya know what I mean. Good luck with it and thanks for the tip on the electricals, I'm going to have to check that on mine as I seem to have a little gremlin pop up from time to time.
mattc
05-10-2009, 08:42 AM
Redbird- the new tank showed up last friday, and it was from an F model. Too long and narrow to use :nopity:
sk8rlee- my little gremlin had to do with a rigged main fuse, I rigged it a little better and haven't had a glitch since. I replaced the coils Friday, but since the tank is not useable I haven't been able to see if that fixed the high rpm problem. I adjusted the timing, though and that helped a lot. Let me know how your bike does when you get it back!

05-10-2009, 09:34 AM
Ahhh, ok, mine was a running problem, it wouldn't start and IF it did it wouldn't stay running, 2 of the cylinders weren't firing, changed that box and its ok now, no rpm issues.

I think I'm going tomorrow. What's the name of the shop? The only issue is that there are about 50 small holes that will need to be fixed.

Vintage ride sounds good to me. I picked up the bike Sunday night, took it for a ride today and.......hooooly crap......only rode for about 20 miles, just to make sure it ran right but what a ride!!!!! Still need to get the registration back, left it with him in case he need to test ride and forgot to get it when I picked up the bike. Get something going on a weekend and I'm all for it.

The shop is called the RV shop it's on choctaw near my house. I'm sure that other shops have it as well. The patch would be big enough to cover a bunch of small holes no problem, just cut up the fiberglass and use the resin as directed. If you have any questions, call.

New tank is from a K model, not an L like the guy in Illinois claimed. It is also in much worse shape than claimed. The real problem is, my petcock does not fit the K tank. Trying to work something out between me, Rad's, and the seller at the moment. Good to know that the K tank will fit my bike, however.. What a clusterfuck.....

Ok, "new" tank is on. Rad's hooked me up with a new petcock that works with this tank. Going for a spin to fill it all the way up with gas. I'd like to say that although Rad's doesn't have the best reputation about some things, Phil and Robert have been very helpful throughout this whole ordeal.

Pictures will be coming soon, however it is now uglier due to a brown tank.

Got the part in, and fixed it this morning. The old seal had apparently returned to its rock hard, right out of the earth, carbon form.WTF It had almost zero properties of rubber anymore...

I have to agree with this statement, I haven't ridden mine as much as I've ridden the Wee but the CB is quite a bit more comfortable for me than the Wee.
jallen
08-13-2009, 07:03 PM
sk8rlee- I'm seriously curious about how you find the CB more comfortable? I have been thinking of getting a wee.. Never rode one. I'm 6'2" with 33 inch inseam @ 225 lbs.. I think with my weight pushing down the bike and my inseam, I could maybe flatfoot those things.. lol
Is the wee a bit too crouched up? I love my CB- the only thing I MAY want to change is a little more room for my legs.. the pegs lower, or the seat higher.. something. Otherwise it IS very comfortable!

Oh, there's definitely more "leg room" on the Wee, I'm 5'11"/6' with about 33" inseam, I can stand flat footed straddling the Wee and have an inch or so between the seat and my crotch and there's a greater distance between the seat and pegs so you knees aren't bent quite as much as on the CB. What makes the CB more comfortable for me is the seat itself and the posture I find myself in. On the Wee I almost feel like I'm reaching for the bars, either that or I'm slightly slouched over the tank, and I end up with sore shoulders and upper back if i ride too long. (side effects of my whiplash, I guess?) I know I can get risers or new bars or whatever but I'd hate to spend tons of money on one thing after another to find the right product or maybe not finding it at all. A lot of people don't seem to like the factory seat, they say it's not firm enough, but it's fine for me. After reading SEVERAL seat comparisons, the heavier guys seem to like the gel seat a lot more than the factory seat. I bought one and it didn't work for me, too stiff, like getting off the couch to sit on the floor, so I've come to the conclusion that it probably has something to do with my weight, I'm sitting at a feather-like 145lbs with no a** to speak of, so the CB seat being softer is more comfortable for me.
I'm sure I could come up with more comparisons if I keep writing long enough but I think I'll stop for now. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

No problem... I find the CB seat and position pretty comfy. I put some shorter and more sporty bars on it (thanks Redbird!) and that gave me a little forward lean into the wind for highway speeds. The strangest thing for me is to have my legs spread so far apart. Most of my time has been on dirt bikes and sport v-twins, and this thing is twice as wide!

At least til I buy tires... Im actually looking at Michelin Anakees

Have not made up my mind yet.. I am going to take off the headlight and see how they look.. If I dont like them I will put the headlight back on...
I think it will be cool to match my brake light.

But I will wait til I see the headlights to pass judgement....
Also.... I got the spoke rims in today.. But the rear is an 18 .. So that makes the Anakee's out of the question...
Now Im looking at .Duro HF 918's

Here is a pic of the new front Spoker.. .The rear tire will be here Monday.. Ill mount it up then..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v122/swampboy/IMG_0443.jpg
Oil pan and filter housing ... Hit with some hi temp black....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v122/swampboy/IMG_0442.jpg
Decided on a different speedo than the one I posted earlier...(It was backordered)
This one is a little smaller and didnt have the indicator lights.. So I drilled out the headlight housing and mounted some radio shak LED indicators in the headlight...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v122/swampboy/IMG_0441.jpg
And last but not least... I read around on the CB750 forum... And apparently loose starter clutch bolts make a pretty bad rattle noise that goes away above idle..(sound Familiar?)
So I pop off the stator cover and the bolts where so loose I could turn them by hand..
A few drops of locktite each and tighten them up.. I think I am good to go now...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v122/swampboy/IMG_0440.jpg
I also pulled the oil pan to make sure that the hydrolic tensioner was getting enough pressure.. It is clean now and pretty sure its working correctly...
I am pretty sure the rattle will be gone.. Ill let you know for sure as soon as Its finished and fired up....
I think I still have the Acerbis headlight MCInfantry gave me. I was going to give it to Manimal but he's selling his bike now.
You want it? I can go look for it.
I also have a small dual 4" headlight from some kind of Honda ATV that might work, if you want to try it.

It depends on what your original stator looks like.

You can find some decal sheets at the hobby shop, (Hobby Hutt) iirc, that have a checkerboard pattern on them.
I think Monokote makes them.
They should be flexible to handle some compound curves.
They're used on R/C airplanes, but are fuelproof, and stick well.
