Stay loose, as already said.

Lower air pressure helps alot.

Always brake BEFORE the corner, not during the corner.

Brake mainly with your FRONT, yes the front, I know your scared, but the rear doesn't do much. And again, always brake when the bike is straight up, not at an angle.

YOU are the anti lock brake. IF your front starts to lock up, let slightly off of the brake, then back on the brake.

Avoid the center of the road, usually gravel is thicker there.

And practice, practic, practice.

Well, I was being serious. I use my front to aid in stopping, and use my rear and shifting to slow, and to angle me into the turn, just like dirt bike riding.

Greg, as we discussed on the ride home, once you get used to the concept, you will become more comfortable. Using the rear brake is more for steering than stopping. Both brakes are used in conjunction but the rear is more forgiving. You can't just jam the rear brake and expect to stop anywhere. Using the rear allows you to slide and put the bike where you want it. It is then, while drifting that excess speed is bled. The key to riding on gravel is to try an never use any brakes if possible. That takes a smooth rider and loads and loads of practice. Matt indeed rarely used his front brakes...especially on the downhills.

That power line road was da bomb! Nothing like riding on loose gravel as fast as you can, sliding, spinning, up a narrow TINY road with no guard rail, 800' drop off's in the clouds because of rain and fog. That was one that stayed in my memory. Rounding a turn and seeing NOTHING but fog below me at the edge of the road! Of course I'm always picked on because I never see the scenery. I'm always concentrating on the road ahead and where I should be in the next 3 seconds...

The "Chestnut Lodge" has availability May 28th-31st. I was informed that the Chestnut is their most popular rental. We will need to book ASAP to ensure accommodations. Price will be $50.00 per person per night, that's $200.00 for the extended holiday weekend. This reservation will require a $500.00 deposit. I do not have a problem fronting the money for the deposit, but I would feel a lot better if we could get a estimated number of participants.
