with bridgette gone, i have started to look at my future in motorcycling. given the shady aspects ofthe guy who hit me, there is a chance i will lose money through this whole ordeal. but i wont worry about that right now.
as far as bikes go, i want another touring bike, but i want to try something more dedicated (i.e. has more power LOL).
i also want a motard. i've been browsing through smj in my spare time but i also want to ask your opinion here. is there a motard that can match fit into this criteria.
- able to do 110-130 miles per tank (modified tanks allowed)
- capable of triple digit speeds
- streetable
- reliable
- insatiable power lol
i'll be selling my failed track bike experiment to help offset costs, and make room, for it. because of this it will be a track whore as well.
i'm not against building one from a dirt or ds chassis but i'd prefer a pre-built or factory designed one.
any thoughts?
Budget? I love this one -

ATK will be lucky to get you 50 miles
None of the motards will get you the mileage you are looking for. 75 miles per tank is a realistic goal. Honestly, the comfort level being what it is, you will be glad to stop every 75 miles for fuel...and to get feeling back into your ass cheeks.
All the motards will do triple digit speeds but you won't want to spend much time there. It's not that much fun honestly.
They will all be uncomfortable compared to what you are used to but a motard is different than any other bike. They are not made to be ridden the same way as your past bikes and that is important to keep in mind.
A dual sport bike IS different than a tard and many people wrongly confuse the two.
That said...
KTM 690SM
Husaberg 570 or better yet a used Husaberg 650. The "berg's" have TONS of power and in the right hands will embarass MANY sport bikes. I think they make close to 65hp stock which is a lot for a motard. My 450 makes 45ish and is tons of fun.
The Husky 610 would be a good choice as well for a streetable motard. The 510 is the big brother to my race bred 450. Both the 510 and 450 make more power than the 610 in stock form but are not as street worthy. They are much more high strung than the 610.
You can always look into something like what Tyler has and convert a 650r Honda. While no slouch, they are not overwhelmingly powerful and are considerably heavier than others.

that's the kinda info i am looking for. thanks keith.
i don't have dreams of this being a do-it-all bike. just something to enjoy locally and toss in the back of the truck and take to the mountains with the r1 maybe once a year or 2.
how is gas mileage on them? enough available electrical load to add auxiliary lights?
also, probably won't be buying anything until the bills for this accident are covered and also until i can ride again. not sure how long either of those are going to take.

06 SM610 right here about 6500 miles. I average 40-44 mpg, 3 gal tank. I'd hate to sell it but, I NEED a track-only Motard. The plastics are scratched, it's the tank panels that look bad, I can replace them. The speedo finally crapped-out and have a Trail Tech VAPOR sittin on my desk I have to install. I customized a tiddy tail which the first plate mount didn't work, although, I've got a different one in mind and have to get the specs to my firends machine shop to have it made. For you I'd throw-in the new rear distanza and front with 80-90% of tread left. If you're intested shoot me a mail, we'll figure something-out.
You know Ducati now has their HYPERMOTARD, I don't know any spec's but, it looks like a beast.

phil, all you had to do was disconnect the battery, and it would reset the speedo..... its a COMMON problem on ALL husky's... i have to do mine every so often

I've had to do that in the past and it didn't work this time. I'm gonna go thru all the connections first before I install the vapor. thanks.

Others get good milage. The best I have seen is about 35mpg. Depending on the bike will tell you what kind of aux lighting you can add but again, they are different than dual sport bikes. I've ridden a lot of different bikes and have been riding for a while and honestly I haven't had more fun than on a Motard. That's just me.

Love that KTM video! I rode a 950 not long ago. It's heavy but has the power to move it. Still, it's one of the only bikes that meets all your criteria. Another one is the Ducati Hypermotard but mileage might be an issue, not sure. The new Aprilia Dosoduro 750 might be another choice but doesn't make quite the power that the Duc and KTM do and also has a small tank.

If price were not a factor, I'd get the Ducati because of the strong low-end torque.
For racing, I'd go with a 450 mx bike tarded. For something more practical and still a viable racing machine, it would have to be the KTM 690 SMC.

The Hypermotard and the 950 are not motards...sorry to say. They are closer to nekid bikes than motards. They are both awesome but you couldn't even THINK about doing much of the cutting up on a 950 or 1100. How many times are you going to bail off through a ditch from the hwy, jump a driveway, get onto a golf cart path, hop a bunch of curbs and go off roading on a 14k dollar bike?

I know nothing about them except that the RXV seems to be a beast.
Since cost is no object, How about an Aprillia SXV?

Because if he gets one he knows I will come and steal it from him!
LOL
Actually Stu, if Aprilia has worked out the bugs on the 550's that would be a great choice....except it's 60 mile range and 40 hour rebuild time on a v twin.
They are STUPID fast!

You're right, the Ducati's are not a TRUE motard. I think between the Aprilla(if they've worked their kinks out) and the Husky would give you what you're looking for. I was after the Aprilla in the beginning until I learned of their HIGH maintence regime. Which turned me off, although their bikes are BAD-ASS looking. The toughest of all the motards I researched.

Stu, glad to see you back!!! When I get back from Germany, I'll swing by and see ya.
As for the Aprilla, very, very vibey!!! Fast as hell but after 20 minutes my butt, hands and feet were numb!!! I've riden both the KTM SM and the Ducati Hypermotard and they are fun indeed, but as stated before, not true motards. If I was buying one, it'd be the Husky.
Although....here is a video of Ruben Xaus on the Duck....Hmmm...

upon further thought (like i have anything better to do right now lol) i'm gonna lower my requirements for the supermoto. my "big vision" is as follows
r1- group ride/tarmac exploration/occasional track day bike
future sport tourer - commuter/travel/vacation bike
motard - dirt/track day/local exploration bike
from all the videos i have seen and testimonials i have read to get a sm that meets all my wishes would encrouch too far into what i use the r1 for. i'll avoid the liter twin supermotos and focus on something smaller. the sad thing is i'm months out from getting this so who knows what will change...
