View Full Version : BMW's ain't what they used to be......

I now have a little over 2000 miles on the 800GS. On the last two rides, when the ambient temperature rose above 90 degrees and the fuel level fell to half a tank, it would stall. This progressively worsened so Weave offered to truck me over to Heberts today. Heberts felt it was a computer issue so they did a complete program update. I tried replicating it after the upload and it would not stall so hopefully it is solved.
Then on the way home, Weave and I noticed that the gas tank is coming apart! Down each side of the tank, there is a seam where they "weld" the top half to the bottom half. It is now separating at that seam on both sides of the bike. I’ll be bringing it back to Heberts next week for a new gas tank.

Damn. I'll have to check mine but that's the first report I've heard about a gas tank separating, and I've been on the F800 forum for over a year.
My bike had a minor stalling issue. It would happen after long runs at constant speed when I pulled in the clutch to coast but it was sporadic. Hebert's changed out the fuel pump electronics and that fixed it.
I've also heard about F800's stalling in the rain because of water getting sucked into the charcoal cannister from the bottom vent hose. It's a simple fix - cut in a plastic "T", attach a short hose and it breaks the vacuum.

I already did the "T" fix so I shouldn't have any problems with the rain. If the computer update doesn't end up working, they next step is to change the fuel pump electronics. I'm just wondering why the hell $14,000 bikes are having these issues. BS in my book.

Not what you would expect but at least they can fix it. KTM is having a similar problem with their 690's but unfortunately, the dealers are having a tough time fixing some of them.
I was hesitant to buy a newly designed bike but the 3-year warranty was a selling point. What puzzles me is that BMW gives you the cheapest chain that they could find. Some of them failing with less than a 1000 miles. Not a big ticket item but still qwer Why not a DID or RK chain?

Stuntman, just found this on the F800 site posted 5 days ago:
It is a double-lined tank. If it's the plastic that is separating, no worries BUT you can bet that BMW will get a earful about it. Good thing for a 3-year warranty. My bike is almost a year old.

Thanks for the link! That is exactly what is happening on mine.
I hear you on the chain as well. Once again, BS in my book!!!

Last I'd checked they hadn't gotten a new BMW tech, but that was a few months ago.

Hebert's has been doing fine by me for the warranty stuff on the piggy. No complaints at this point. They've been humoring me at least as well as the H-D dealer did.

For warranty items, Heberts. So far, they have been..........uh, ok. They ordered a wrong part (twice!) and would not listen to me when I told them the correct part # to order. They also ordered two left mirrors (insurance claim), and refused to order the right one, then charged me extra after I had accepted the claim and after they agreed to do it for the amount received.
The charge for parts was 15% higher than what I could have purchased them for online at Max BMW.

I have found that to be the case with everything I've tried to get from them. I will not do business with them again!

Chicago BMW is also cheaper !

Price-wise, I agree. The front rotors were the same as online, but everything else has been notably more. Fuel controller, for examply: $135 from Max, $195 aV Hebert's.
Oh, if we're bitching about cheap parts, Have y'all checked out the struts on the R12's? KLR owners wouldn't run these things. (My Wilbers are due next Wednesday.)

Due to arrive or due to be rebuilt? My Wilbers were some of the best money I spent on my bike!

Being a small local dealer (as BMW dealers go), I will continue to patronize Heberts as they have been there with good advice and usually can provide small parts over-the-counter rather than having to wait. The premium for allowing Hebert's to stay in business seems well worth it to me. [now tires.... I can't see ever paying $400 to have a pair of tires fitted but then most name-brand dealers will be charging that sort of money]
I hear Chicago BMW can sometimes take three or four weeks to deliver.

Due to arrive. I ordered them from Ted @ The Beemer Shop in June. I can't wait. You want to talk customer service? That is a shop people could take lessons from.
