WATSON - A two-vehicle crash claimed the lives of a young couple on LA 1019 (Springfield Rd) east of LA 447 just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 Jeremy M. Powell, 28, Pine Grove was driving a small Nissan pickup east on LA 1019 when he crossed the center line and struck a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle head on, a State Police spokesman said.

The motorcycle driver, Brandon N. Wright, 22, and his passenger, Joanna M. Wright, 21, both of Denham Springs, sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Powell sustained moderate injuries in the crash and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital by Acadian Ambulance.

Louisiana State Troopers believe drug impairment was a factor in this crash. Police arrested Powell and charged him with 2 Counts of Vehicular Homicide, DWI, Reckless Operation, Possession of Schedule 2 and Schedule 3 Controlled Dangerous Substances, and No Seatbelt.

He will be booked into Livingston Parish Prison upon his release from the hospital, Tpr Russell G. Graham II said

LIVINGSTON — The Pine Grove man who allegedly killed a couple riding a motorcycle in Watson last week has been released from the hospital and jail, officials said Tuesday.

Jeremy M. Powell, 28, was injured in the Aug. 12 wreck, Trooper Russell Graham said.

He was booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center the same day on two counts of vehicular homicide, one count of driving while intoxicated, one count of reckless operation of a vehicle and two counts of illegal possession of prescription drugs, Sheriff’s Office Chief of Operations Perry Rushing said.

Powell posted the $221,750 bond Tuesday, Rushing said.

Man pleads guilty to killing couple in car accident (http://www.wafb.com/Global/story.asp?S=13958248)

Plea bargained to ten year sentence. (I watched the video on the news site. He'll be eligible for parole in three.)

LIVINGSTON, LA (WAFB) - A St. Helena man was sentenced to 10 years behind bars in the deaths of a Livingston Parish couple, following a car accident in August 2009.

Jeremy Powell will serve 10 years behind bars for killing Brandon and Joanna Wright. Powell, who was in a truck, hit the couple on their motorcycle head on. The couple died at the scene. Police say Powell was under the influence of drugs when he crashed,

Wednesday, Judge Zoey Waguespack sentenced Powell to 10 years in prison for each victim. Wright's family is not satisfied, because the judge is allowing Powell to serve them together. He is expected to be eligible for parole in three years.

"He murdered two people. He just got 10 years. When he gets out I just pray to god he doesn't kill somebody else's children," said Brandon's mother, Lisa Allen.

The courtroom was quiet as Brandon and Joanna's families addressed Powell for the last time. Before he was sentenced, Powell told the judge he was sorry, and hoped for forgiveness.

"It's not going to bring her back if she would have said 100 years. I wish he would have got more because what did he get sentenced for, Brandon or Joanna," said Wayne Everett, Joanna's father.

Once Powell leaves prison he'll be on probation for three years, and won't be allowed to drive. He's also responsible for Joanna and Brandon's funeral costs. The Wrights leave behind a six-year-old son.

This "accident" happened less than a mile from my house. I was riding my motorcycle home from work the day it occured. I have to pass the crosses everyday and everyday I think of their families. Powell owes those families much more than 10 years and funeral costs...

He will likely be out in THREE!!

Thats messed up....

Just earlier this week, I saw a guy get sentenced to 50 years hard labor for ATTEMPTED murder!!!!

This dude did shoot two cops, but he didn't KILL them!!

I bet if the guy in this case had hit and killed a motorcycle cop, it'd be a different story...

A cops life shouldn't be worth more than yours or mine, or this couple...

Not trying to make another cop thread... just sayin...

this dude actually killed two people... he should pay dearly, and when he gets out 90% of whatever he makes should go to the kid and the family...

This guy killed 2 people and will serve less time in jail than if you or I were in POSSESSION of an illegal firearm.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU FUCKING PEOPLE!!!!??????

It's a sad situation, for the kid and family. There are too many people, hooked on pills, and I have no sympathy for them. I hope he has to do the time in angola.

i remember when the guy came in to our facility. he was a piece of shit. but we took care of his injuries anyway, and they weren't very severe.

of course, we found out after the fact that he's just killed two people. (sometimes i really hate my job)
i wish the prison would give us fair warning prior to his release that our lives will be just that much more endangered and when.
i hope the surviving child will find some reward in life to help with the loss of his parents. although there is nothing in my mind that would come close.
