For those of you who are looking to really get out there and put your bikes in their element, I'm looking ahead to make this ride along with a few buddies from the area. It's a four day meeting in Creel, Mexico and Copper Canyon. The dates are October 10-13th. I'll be getting off the rig the week before, and not going back out till the week after, so this looks to settle perfect with my schedule if it stays the same.
There are routes that alot of guys take from the border to Creel that is entirely offroad. On the flip side, there are routes that could be done by sportbikes.
Last year there were almost 150 riders from both the US and Mexico who met up down there. Check out the thread from ADVrider to get your appetite wet a bit...

Most people drop in at Presidio (Big Bend Nat. Park) but if we were to go early enough then we could drop in at Laredo or Del Rio and run across Mexico to get a taste of the country. There's some talk about a "pre-rally" around the 7th just south of the border somewhere, so I'm not sure what that's all about but it may be something to make. We'd probably stay in Mexico about a week....the rally is Tuesday through Friday.

i would love to do something like this. I was talking to jayd about this during our trip to n.georgia. ted, how long do you plan to be gone overall? no firm commitments yet, i'm just trying to get a good gauge of what it would take to make this trip.
If I do this I would load my/our KLRs in the back of my Tundra and make the 16hr run down to Teringua ranch (BigBend), spend the night and or a day riding on the ranch then head across the border and meet up with ya'll in Creel or Batopilas. I don't want to spend anymore time around the "border area" than I have to. (the crime and tensions are only gonna get worse with the Minute men burning Mexican flags and the Mexican army making unauth border crossings into the US protecting drug shipments and all)
I can only get 5 working days off (and 4days of weekend) so with 9 days total I can prolly make it happen if I meet up with ya'll there and spend about 6 days in Mexico
Jaime, I gots a spot for ya iffen you're in ;)

With the proper planning I may be able to pull this off ...

If we get a few of us going, then I'm flexible with the schedule and how many days I spend down there. You can figure one day to get to the border, and one day to get home. Say, leave on a saturday, and come back on a Sunday. 9 days total gone from home and 7 spent south of the border.
If it was just Brian and myself then we were planning to go down there the Thursday before and take our time riding across Mexico, but there's alot of it we'll be able to see during the trip next month anyway. JayD - there is alot of crap going on at the border which is why I don't plan on staying the night anywhere near it. If you go through in the morning and get a ways south then things clear up from what everyone says.

Let us know how your trip goes next month down there.
The guys that trailer their bikes to TX where to you leave your rigs? My bike isn't a highway mile muncher and I'd rather trailer across Texas than burn up a knobby on the pavement.
I was thinking of leaving mine on Terilingua Ranch

Thanks JayD! I'm going to start preparing, not sure if I'll make it this year, but I'm going to try and get my bike and myself ready for the trip.
Good deal Duke, the more the merrier! I hope it works out for me too.

So anyone still going? Someone at work wants to work my shift that week and bump me back to days for 2 weeks, which makes taking time off MUCH EASIER.
I'm still not 100% sure if I'm going but I'd really like to.

I went last year. Good times.............................
My vote would be a stop over in Del rio and drop by the Hunters Lodge.

I hate you guys.........
Where were all of you when I was talking about this in Augest? I don't think the wife would be very happy with me if I tired to go now, but we'll see.
So what do you need to get in and out?
Passport, insurance, driver license wise? Anything special?

No passport needed yet, but it helps to get back into the US. Mexican bike insurance, Driver's license, Copy of bike title, or a letter from the lien holder saying it's ok for you to take the bike out of country, Bike registration, and alot of patience to find the place to get your vehicle permit in Mexico. The absolute best way is to follow someone who's entered in at that crossing before and know exactly where to go and what you'll need where. Make 10 copies of everything and bring it all.

I got mine through this company online. They came recommended by alot of the ADVriders and also provided legal and medical insurance in the policy.

With as much traveling as I do I also keep an emergency plan with an evacuation company in case something REALLY gets bad. I've heard alot of good things about them and it's cheap enough to carry from year to year in my opinion.

Also, I'm not sure about Copper Canyon or Creel, but there were most places that we stopped at that took credit cards. I'd suggest bringing cash in and getting 3/4 of it exchanged to pesos. You'd be suprised at how far it stretches and a couple of hundred will last you a while. However, keep a couple of american twenties stashed away in the even of trouble. A twenty to a local mexican cop is like handing over an Escalade to a crack dealer.
