I wonder if there is any interest in a book exchange thread...

I have a number of books that I have read and likes...different topics...

Would any of you be interested in a book exchange thread...where a poster lists what he has available...will pay the postage to the interested party.

The interested party reads the book, signs the inside cover and sends it to the next person in line for it.

Not looking for expensive one of a kind or all time favorite books...just stuff like paper backs...fiction, and non fiction...tech manuals if you want...

Owners can ask for the book back at any time. That would be the first person in the signature part of the book.

Or is this just to gay for you guys.

Let me organize my chit and see what I have to let go...I will post a list of what I have...people can see what they want and post in this thread for exchange titles...so we know who is getting what...

Addresses and contract stuff...do that in PM to each other.

How does this sound so far...

I am gonna start out slow...so we can work the bugs out of it.

Appaloosa by Robert Parker...yup the movie inspiration. New condition.

Will post others as I look through my stuff.

Idea...write yer handle, town and date on the inside cover. Travel log of where the book has been.

THanks people...hope this works.

Don't tell me you would entrust those to the U.S. Postal Service.

You are aware of the U.S. Postal Service and that it is a part of the U.S. Goobermint known for it's superior ability to screw things up are you not?

That is why we should be careful to put it in the mail. Paperbacks mostly is what I am doing for now.

and make sure you let people know if you do not want your books defaced in any way...so no dog earing (get a damn book marker)...no highlighting (write it down someplace if you wanna remember it)...and no signing the inside cover (if the lender wants his book to not have the travel log stuff I mentioned.)

Oh and thanks to whoever set up the title...

I've got tons, but I'll start with these:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/2evil4u/IMG_3302-1.jpg

Inglourious Basterds Screenplay.
I read this while watching the BluRay on Tuesday. I'm amazed how much good stuff was cut out. Huge amount of developmental material in the screenplay that didn't make it into the movie.

Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon
The book behind the TV show from the man who also writes/directs/produces HBO's "The Wire"

Into The Kill Zone: A Cop's Eye View of Deadly Force by David Klinger
Sociological study of police shootings and their mental ramifications to the officers.

Games Criminals Play and How You Can Profit by Knowing Them by Bud Allan & Diana Bosta
Study of how inmates manipulate prison guards.

Prime Obsession by John Derbyshire
Pop-Math book about Bernhard Riemann and the Riemann Hypothesis

God's Other Son by Don Imus (yes, that Imus)
Simply the funniest book ever written. Based on characters from Imus in the Morning back in the 70's and 80's

We Are Doomed - Reclaiming Conservative Pessimism by John Derbyshire
Exactly that. Great depressing read.

The Old Man and the Harley by John Newkirk
Decent motorcycle book. First 2/3s about the father is very good. It drifts a bit when the son recreates the trip, but still overall pretty decent.

Will - The Autobiography of G. Gordon Liddy
According to this, the G-man could be Chuck Norris's father.

You can look them up on Amazon or whatnot to get better descriptions.

Logistcs-wise, should we create a master list for the thread with just titles, authors, first donor and current location for quick perusal?

We should put together a potential rules list for the first post.

I agree...I have been thinking on how to track the book...without having 20,000 upteen pages of posts to search through...and I am looking for feedback.

Maybe...the master thread it the book list in the opening post...name of book, author and who has it...since this was my idea, I can try to maintain it.

But when a book goes out...and to keep track of the reviews...what is the problems you guys can see if I/we create a thread for just that book...

Example. Now that we have a first customer...Juice and the Longest Ride...as the lender...I would set up a thread for that book.

Juice hangs onto the book until the next person wants it...then he sends it out. Other wise...if we keep sending it back to the original lender, it could get expensive, if you have a popular book.

I thought about the travel log of the book...maybe an index card in the book would work better than writing on the book itself...serves two purposes...as a book travel log...and a book marker (keeps dog earing to a minimum).

Any other ideas...I have not tried something like this...but will do what I can...since I opened this can of worms...

I like the idea of a thread for each book. Keeping that together would probably require a sub-forum. Like off-topic or the gun forum. That might make the whole endeavor easier to handle if it takes off. It would have a master sticky and subsequent threads. I can't create that but it may be workable.

John,

What do you think about creating a couple of subform?. One entitled "Books Available" and the other "Books on Loan" I can grant you Mod status of the library and you could move books around in their appropriate forums depending on their status.

We would just have to be sure that when members list books that they list them separately, one book per thread.

Just and idea. What you think? This is your baby, you can do with it whatever you wish.

MOD...yer scaring the crap outta me...I would not know what to do with all the buttons.

Lets just see what happens for a bit...shake out the bugs...get some organized fecal collection done...and then we can talk.

I plan on looking at the thread a little closer...and extracting the titles into a thread just for books available. I can use the current thread and collect from there...maybe if we can lock down the available thread so that I can post...dunno...

Then maybe a one thread per title...for lending status of that book, book report and rating.

Obviously this is a work in progress...gimme some time to work it out...not every experiment yields success...

But thanks...I appreciate your offer and confidence in me.

Big John, I have, on your behalf done a search for a support group to assist and perhaps guide you with this new endeavor of yours. I believe I have found the perfect association for you.

Their mission is to share ideas, problems, and solutions unique to the Solo Librarian, an isolated librarian or information collector/provider who has no professional peers within the immediate organization.

Sounds like a perfect match to me.
