Upgrade of Vbulletin software - v4.0

Beginning tomorrow morning (Monday 1/25/10), I will be updating the forum software from the latest version of 3.x to 4.x. This is a MAJOR update/overhaul they have done on the forum software so I'm not sure what exactly it will change looks-wise or functionality-wise. The update may break the army-green theme on the board or any other things. I anticipate starting the update around 8am and being done by 5pm at the ABSOLUTE latest (hoping to be done before noon). During most of the process, the forum will be closed to the public. Please bear with us during this time... From what I've heard, this update is a great one!

Please use this thread to post comments, suggestions, and any bugs you've found before/during/after the update process so we can get the forum up and running again and resolve any issues ASAP.

well this is MUCH different... not in a bad way just got to get used to it i suppose... this is a theme I found as the one that comes with it was way to white in color from what we are used to... I will be updating this theme slightly to customize it more for our forum but its pretty similar in colors to our last theme...

yep, this is what they had, vbulletin must have done some revisions, it seems to be working fine just a different format, thiers was all screwed up, it would overlap my text, cut my avatar in half, all kinds of junk, and it took them about 4X longer to update.

Daaaaaaaamn......I think I just fell down the rabbit hole! I can't change theme's either. User names are too small and the text in the reply box is WAY too small when it's being typed. Something with a stronger contrast (like Juice's screen shot) will be very welcome.

Whoa. Commenting on 2Dogs "Quick Reply", The main "Reply to Thread" button seems to only be at the top. It directs you to the Quick reply box where you have to click "Go Advanced" to get to the standard reply editor.

YOu can also just click the "Go Advanced button under the "Quick Reply" box to get the regular editor. That's not too bad.

Here's another niggle, When you post a new post, it doesn't take you to the new post. Just leaves you on the top of the page.

It is now the dark theme. There is no longer a theme chooser pulldown on the bottom of the main forum page.

Any way to remove the "File Uploader" pulldown just above the Undo & redo buttons? (Or maybe set the file upload size to zero in the admin backbone?)

I don't see those "X"s on the side like in Juice's picture from the homepage though. There doesn't look to be any way to determine if there are new posts in a forum except that the member screen name form the latest post is highlighted in this thread on the home page and not any of the other forums.

It's still directing me to the top of the last page of a thread when I click on the "go to first unread post" button on the new posts page. Just another thing to put on the list.

Looks like this upgrade might just be ok iin the end, although it has been forced upon us. They have some really cool new features. It's just going to take some time to get comfortable with them. For those looking, "The who's online" feature is located in the quick links tab.

Are you SURE its not working or is it that it has forgotten what you have and haven't read since the upgrade? because it is very likely it doesn't remember whats new or whats not been read since the update was done... it probably thinks all threads are not read at the moment...

The button highlighted in red from teds post took me to the top post of page 2 of this thread. The little icon to the right of the thread title on the main page takes me to the last post in the thread.

But if I click the "view first unread" link at the top of this page, it does take me to the new posts.

Dude....I've been using the same button for the last four and a half years. Once again......this is NOT for new threads.....it's for UNREAD POSTS that have been posted since the thread was last visited. Yes, I'm sure it is not working the same way it was for the last 4.5years. When BOW went to the new format the same thing happened over there (still isn't fixed), but as a moderator here I figured I'd bring it up.

Are you referring to like say the meet and greet thread where you last read it last week (aka before I did the upgrade) and now when you click FIRST UNREAD POST it takes you to the begining of the thread or have you repeatedly read the SAME THREAD SINCE NOON TODAY... because if it is the later its a problem... if it is the former then the board just forgot what you have read when I did the upgrade... u following me? The board sets a cookie to remember what the last post was when you clicked that link last time... but this update killed all those cookies... so now when you click that button to go to the first unread post, it will have no idea what you have read and what you have not read since the update... so the amount of time you are using the button isn't the question... my question is have you used that button TWICE (say once at noon and read the latest update in the thread) and then say 5 people posted to the thread and you clicked that button at like 4pm today. aka BOTH TIMES have to be after the forum update...

Gotcha... I think its a vbulletin bug that will be fixed soon... as mcinfantry said he is experiecing the same problem on his forum too... I will look into it though :)

At the moment, no... for ease of modding, we usually only maintain one color scheme. Do you really dislike this one?

Now that I'm home and looking at it on my good monitor, I have to say this is a stressful color scheme to me. I didn't think it was much different, but I can feel myself straining to keep it all in focus. I'm not sure why, but it just seems to be in a perpetual, not-quite-in-focus mode. Especially when there is a high contrast colorset in the forum background. Like the top menu bar on some of the screenshots.

Well ok... I got the Today's posts added to this theme... and let me say 4.0 is NO improvement from the administration side so don't feel left out... We'll try to tweak the themes as best as I can to make them easy to use for everyone... unfortunantly we're stuck with this version as our license ended for the old one so there isn't any going back... I can try to find a better theme than this one but this is the closest I saw to what we had last....

I'm indifferent about the theme, I am not sure I like how small the text is here in the quick reply box and before I used to be able to click Today's Posts without being logged in and it would direct me to a login, now I have to login before I even see it. Nothing I can't get used to, just making observations.

You can add individual user specific themes to the forum. Just have to install the packages into the vbulletin. Then users can set it to look which ever way they like. But i personally like this one. Call Of Duty style. w00t!!!

As far as the layout... I'm afraid that's how the new vbulletin is... some advanced theme may change it up but this is how vbulletin's new look is... I think it will just take some getting used to

I just logged back in at home, and it came up with dark vision....
it was totally fubarred, with all sorts of red "x"'s where button images once were, among other things...

no prob yall... just have to bear with me... I'm not a computer programmer by any means merely. I have a lot of system administration experience but I'm pretty amateur with coding so it takes a bit to get things to work right... If I was a master coder you could theoretically have this look just like the last version... would just take a ton of code to do... way beyond my expertise! But don't worry we will get some new logos for these themes, get some today's posts buttons... and work on it from there! Anything else we are missing?

Hope and Change take time, I know, but I do like the new look. Good call for moving to this format.

These are nice because untill recently I could log in and in 5 or 10 minutes could catch up on all of the posts for the day.

It's good to see more traffic but hope the mods and Juice keep the static and useless post whore drivel to a non-existant level.

There are times, when , for some reason, the sig line stuff winds up in the middle of a post.
Not always, and can occur anywhere within a thread, on any post.
Sometimes a refresh, or back out, and go back in, and it'll work..

I fly Low: what browser version are you using? what operating system? and that is only with the Darkness theme? can you try using one of the other 2 and see if it still does it?

ok.. just tried the reply with quote thing, and it's up to it's tricks again...
I clicked it again and am typing in the advanced post mode...

Browser: IE 7 (Company pc, and due to other software issues, i have to stay at this level, for some time, until the software in question can handle newer versions)
I have firefox, but seldom use it.
OS: XP Pro SP2 (again, company pc, and software issues... yadda yadda..)
I've just been using Darkness 3, for the time being..
I'll switch around and try some others later, as time permits.

Hey one thing i noticed was when you click on the sign in. The box is black and the text is black. It took me a minute to figure out if i was typing in it or not. Maybe you could make the text blue or something??

which theme is that on? I can definitely fix that one...

OH.. and I'm in dark vision right now, and the text as I'm typing is black, on a dark grey background... kinda hard to read, if'n ya know what I mean...

DarkVision is supposed to release an update on Sunday to fix the text color issue as well as a few others (the login color too)...

The split post issue is a vBulletin issue that they are aware of and working on..

I've gone ahead and fixed one issue temporarily with split posts but more may remain and will have to wait on a vBulletin fix.

I've also uploaded an alternate version of the DarkVision theme with text in white instead of blue if you like that better :)

Been playing with darkvision... still getting the wierd thing with the sig line graphics,being displayed in the middle of a post...
Also getting the reply with quote bug, too..
I noticed yesterday, that when I hit the reply with quote, the reply box popped up on the right side of the post I was quoting.
Not sure if that's where it was going before, but the screen was just right to where I could see it, I guess.

Ok the reporting of bugs and stuff is becoming overwhelming and hard to track... I am going to install a bug tracking system today so users can report bugs along with what theme/operating system/browser is affected by that bug... I will post the URL to report bugs as soon as it is up and running

The "Go to first new post" button is actually bringing you to the first new post now, instead of the top of the page of the first new post.
And the column style bunching up of the text in posts has stopped too.

OK... a new version of Pixel-White Wood was just released and I've uploaded it... I also tweaked it a bit so the wood theme continues throughout the page... its not perfect but I think its better then before...

I will fix the header image tomorrow
