I get a phone call from my roommate yesterday while I was at work, on the boat in Cameron, and she tells me that my house got broken into. Now, I had to get off of work and find a way back home from Cameron to check it all out and see what all is missing (a friend was nice enough to go pick me up) so now, not only do I no longer have a 50" TV or a PS3 or a laptop computer (old one but still used it) I'm also going to miss probably about a weeks worth of work!!! :fireangry:
So, as one of those "too little too late" kind of things, I'm now in the market for a security system and was wondering if any of you might have any suggestions. I asked the officers that came by today and they suggested calling Tommy's Lock & Alarm in BR, any experience with these guys or should I go with one of those big chain companies like Brinks? Or any experience with other companies? Also, what do these systems cost? I don't exactly have a whole lot of money laying around to pay thousands of dollars for installation. Any advice what so ever would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Brinks etc??? Don't see how some minimum wager calling to chat with the thieves is going to help. I started a thread asking about that a while back.
Best thing you can do is make it more difficult to break into your house than your next door neighbors.

All thief's shall fucking HANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am with you on that one...
Did I ever tell you about how I think there should be a predator clause attached to every law on the books. If you break the law...no matter what it is...and it is deemed a predatory act...you get the capital punishment neck tie party. We take this shit way to lightly...and look at who pays the cost.

Naw they give them thirty maybe ninty days and turn their sorry asses loose.
Harden your residence and get the security system as well. As slow as cops are, the crooks can clean you out and be gone before they arrive.
Hardening along with a security system will slow them down before they can make off with the loot.

Damn man, sorry to hear.
I've been saying for years that we should start lopping off digits of convicted thieves. I say digits instead of hands because anyone can make a mistake ONCE. But if they want to make a career out of it, eventually they'll run out of "second chances".
I'm not that far from you in Metairie. If you need anything... holler.

I got the rope, whose got the tree?
What sucks the most about the whole deal is that the more I look around and notice stuff that's still here the more I get the feeling that it was someone that knew what they wanted, knew where it was, someone that's been in the house before, ya know, someone I know. What makes me think this is that nothing else in the house is messed up. They took the tv in the living room but didn't bother with the surround sound system, they got my PS3 and games in my room but didn't take that tv or anything else in that room, maybe grabbed the computer because it was there but nothing else was even messed with, no rummaging through the closets or cabinets or drawers and, doing my best to think like a criminal, I think if a common thief/thug opened a drawer and saw a handgun sitting in it he'd probably take it and mine was still there, right where I kept* it, so I'm assuming that that drawer was never opened.
Thanks Redbird, I appreciate it. The only real problem for me is figuring out how to take care of this with the ins company, I've never been robbed before so this is a whole new "adventure" for me. Now, if any of you are in the construction field and wanna cut me a deal on the installation of a new front door I don't think I'd have a problem with that. :D On a lighter note though, it looks like I might be here for the Vintage Bike Night this Sat after all!!!! Friday12 Is that still on?
*I used the word "kept" because it will no longer reside in that drawer, I will definitely find a new place for it to sleep when I'm not home

My brother does construction like that. I usually pay him in beer and steak, but I'm sure his regular rates are reasonable.
And yea, the Vintage Bike Night is still on. Looks like there will be a "crowd" too... you, me, and swampy... three's a crowd, right? :D

I don't even know what a PS3 is. Is there a large 13" TV out there somewhere?

Wow, what a great bunch of people we have here, thanks for all the offers.
Redbird: thanks for that foot work but if Carl will do it for even cheaper I think I'll go that route.
Carl: That would be friggin awesome!!!!! Let me know when you're available and I'll go pick up a door somewhere. I'll provide the beer, whatcha drinking? As far as the tv and computer, I still have my "small" 32" tv in my room that I'll move down to the living room. All I used it for in my room was to play games or watch movies, both on the playstation so it's got no use there now, and the computer was a secondary one, one that I used for stuff that isn't compatible with my Mac computer so I'm good on that too, it's probably been a good 9 months since I've even turned that computer on. Thanks though. And, sorry I stole your thunder, it's totally unacceptable for someone that just got robbed to steal something from someone else, I'll wait a little longer next time.
Driz, no problem, I did quite a bit of running around yesterday so I probably wouldn't have been able to answer anyway. I should still be around the house by mid morning, still going through my "waking up" routine so I ought to be able to answer.
One of the things that sucks about this whole situation is that I actually know a guy that does/did construction work that could easily install a door, I've even been to a couple of houses he's built from the ground up pretty much by himself. The only problem is that he's one of my own personal suspects, that special somebody that has been in my house quite a few times and knew what I had and where the stuff was and, according to his old lady, a couple of weeks ago he fell off the wagon right into a crack pipe (which is precisely why I think it may have been him) so I don't think I'll be trying to contact him to give me a hand.
Thanks again, everyone.

have you settled with insurance yet?
Damn cuz. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Something like that can leave you pissed off for a great while. Go with your gut on the who. I was going to suggest that it may be someone who knows you, or at least a neighbor. Someone who might know when you are gone. Wish I could catch a thief in the act. I need a little satisfaction from time to time. And what, with the government trying to take away all the good $hit....well...

Naw, haven't done the insurance thing yet but I'm pretty much convinced I wont. My deductible is so high that the replacement cost of the few things that were taken plus the door replacement might add up to the deductible....$2500 so I'm pretty much just screwed. Damn bastard could've at least taken enough to make it worth an insurance claim.

Don't contact your insurance unless you want to submit a claim. Just contacting them about a loss will go in your homes record whether you file a claim or not and be counted against your home, a black mark if you will. Up goes the rates.
Just calling them to ask something like "Hey I got a leak in my ceiling, will insurance cover that?" That will go in your homes file. Guess what that file follows the house even if you change insurers.

Really? That's interesting. I did go and talk to my agent and she called the ins company, don't think she gave them my account info though, she was just calling to find out how, exactly, a claim should be filed in this situation, they said for ME to call if I wanted to file a claim and gave me a phone # so if what you say is true (and I'm not doubting you at all) hopefully they didn't get my acct info from her. That does bring up another question though, would a claim, particularly a burglary claim, follow ME as well of the house? What I mean is, once I move out of this place would a burglary claim still show against me when trying to insure the new house? Reason I'm asking is, and I'm probably about to answer my own question, because she said stuff like acts of nature are kind of excused because there's no way to really prevent or provoke natural disasters. On the other hand stuff like burglaries aren't excused and stay on record so they can keep a look out for fraud.

A claim follows the house, even your nonclaim has been recorded and was entered into your homes file. Especially crime related claims or non claims.
Auto insurance records follow the driver. Home owners insurance records follow the house.
